‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Co-Writer Drops Out Of Sequel Because Of Pay Disparity Dispute

Crazy Rich Asians‘ was a huge success when it was released in 2018. It received rave reviews from critics and brought in over $230 million against a budget of just $30 million.

You know what that means, right? SEQUELS! It was announced pretty early on that a sequel was being developed. Director Jon M. Chu was expected to return, along with screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim.

Unfortunately, things have been put on pause because of a pay disparity dispute. Adele Lim, who was brought on as a co-writer by Chiarelli for the first film, has dropped out of this sequel after learning just how much more Chiarelli was being offered.

According to insiders, Chiarelli was expected to make around $1 million for this sequel. Meanwhile, Lim was offered around $110,000.

That’s kinda f**ked up, yeah?

“Being evaluated that way can’t help but make you feel that is how they view my contributions,” Lim told reporters. She continued by saying she believes women and people of color often are regarded as “soy sauce,” simply brought in to sprinkle culturally specific details.

Warner Bros. told Lim’s reps that the offers are “industry-standard established ranges based on experience and that making an exception would set a troubling precedent in the business.”

For those wondering, Chiarelli has written The Proposal and Now You See Me 2. Lim was a TV writer before joining Crazy Rich Asians as a co-writer.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Becomes The Highest-Grossing Romantic Comedy In 10 Years

It’s been over a month since Crazy Rich Asians was released inside theaters, and it’s still breaking records.

According to estimates from Box Office Mojo, the movie is now the highest-grossing romantic comedy in the U.S. in 10 years. It just surpassed the 2009 film, The Proposal, which starred Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock.

Crazy Rich Asians has made a total of $165.7 million. The Proposal made just under $163 million.

“The movie, released in August and based on Kevin Kwan’s novel satirizing affluent families in Asia, has been especially significant for Asian-American audiences as the first major Hollywood studio film in 25 years to star a majority-Asian cast.”

It’s pretty insane how successful this movie has been. I mean, I think a lot of people expected it to perform well, but these numbers are spectacular. Before this movie, the romantic comedy was kinda dead. They brought it back to life.

I’m telling you right now, the romantic comedy genre is going to return because of this movie. I’m not saying the return will be great, but Hollywood will try to take advantage of this.

Love this movie or hate it, but at least show some respect and admire it.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Has Wildly Successful Second Weekend At Box Office, Experiences Only 6% Drop From First Week!

I didn’t think it was possible, but ‘Crazy Rich Asians‘ had an even more impressive second weekend at the box office. As you all know, it grabbed the number one spot last week with an impressive $26.5 million total.

In its second weekend at the box office, the film made around $25 million and once again had the number one spot. It dropped just 6% from its first week, which is absolutely insane. I mean if you remember, Wonder Woman was considered a huge success after only dropping 45% in its second weekend. Of course, Wonder Woman was working with much bigger numbers, but still…a 6% drop is impressive.

In total, Crazy Rich Asians has earned a little over $76 million domestically, which is more than double its budget of $30 million.

“That haul will only continue to swell as the film starts its slow rollout in overseas markets: It took in more than $7 million in international box office this weekend — including $1.8 million in Singapore, where much of the film is set, making it the largest opening for a romantic comedy ever in that market.”

As we reported last week, the studio behind the film is already developing a sequel, so be prepared for a Crazy Rich Asians 2 in 2020.

A Sequel To ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Is Already In Development, Jon M. Chu Set To Direct

After the great success of ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ the studio announced that they’re already developing a sequel, and original director Jon M. Chu is set to return.

Warner Bros. also announced most of the creative team will be returning, including screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim. As most of you know, Crazy Rich Asians grabbed the number one spot at the box office last weekend, bringing home a five-day total of $35 million. It was the biggest opening for a romantic comedy in years.

“The groundbreaking film arrives as Hollywood is being pressured to feature greater diversity on screen. ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ has been lauded as the first studio film in over 25 years since 1993’s ‘Joy Luck Club’ to feature a nearly all Asian-American cast.”

No word on what the sequel will cover, but one thing is for sure, America is ready for it. You all know I’m not a fan of sequels, and I’d rather the studio give them money to make a brand new film, but you have to take what you can get sometimes.

Creating a successful Asian-American FRANCHISE would be groundbreaking, so in this case (and this case only) I say bring on the sequels!

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Is The Number One Movie In America, Find Out How Much It Made Inside!

Hopefully Hollywood finally gets the message: diversity at the box office can be profitable. For decades, Hollywood refused to make big blockbusters featuring a diverse cast. They believed a film needed a white lead to be successful.

Obviously, in recent years, America has made it clear that’s not the case. We’re beginning to see more and more diversity in Hollywood, and this past weekend we saw another major sign that things are changing.

Crazy Rich Asians,’ the first Hollywood studio film to feature an all-Westernized Asian cast in over 25 years, premiered inside theaters across America.

The film took the number one spot at the box office this past weekend, bringing home $26.5 million during its three-day North American debut. It premiered back on Wednesday though, so it’s five-day total was $35.3 million. Crazy Rich Asians worked with a budget of $30 million, so after just five days inside theaters, the film is a success.

Deadline reports:

“The Warner Bros. movie, based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel, scored the top opening for a rom-com in three years and the top start of the year so far for any comedy. Nearly 40 percent of the audience was Asian, an unprecedented showing for a Hollywood studio release. Caucasians made up 41 percent of ticket buyers, followed by Asians (38 percent), Hispanics (11 percent), African-Americans (6 percent) and other (4 percent), according to Warners and comScore.”

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Might Have A $26 Million Opening, According To Experts…BUT WE THINK THE NUMBER WILL BE HIGHER!

Crazy Rich Asians‘ will hit theaters tonight (August 15th) and early tracking had it bringing home around $20 million during its five-day opening this weekend. The updated reports now claim it could make up to $26 million, which would easily be enough to take the top spot at the box office.

I believe it’ll make at least $30 million. It has a lot of momentum. Not only do people want to go out and support this movie because it’s the first studio movie in years to feature a predominately Asian-American cast.

But people also want to see it just because it looks like a good movie. It’s currently sitting at a comfortable 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Crazy Rich Asians worked with a $30 million budget, so if it’s able to bring home $30 million in its opening weekend, well, that would be a HUGE story. The only thing working against this movie is the fact that it’s a romcom. They have struggled at the box office the past few years.

But I think the need for greater diversity on the big screen and the rave reviews will help this movie a lot.

The First Trailer For ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Has Arrived, Watch It Inside!

I saw ‘Crazy Rich Asians‘ in the headlines when I woke up this morning and thought, “Oh, god. What did Donald Trump say now” but thankfully this has nothing to do with Trump.

Crazy Rich Asians is the name of a romantic comedy feature hitting theaters August 17, 2018.

The film, which is based on Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel of the same name, stars Constance Wu and Henry Golding. Henry’s character invites Wu’s character to a wedding in Singapore to meet his family, and that’s when she discovers that his family is stupid rich.

In addition to Wu and Golding, you’ll also find Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina and Ken Jeong.

As mentioned above, it’ll hit theaters in August. You should watch the trailer below. It looks pretty hilarious.
