A ‘Pineapple Express 2’ Was Set To Happen, But Studio Turned It Down Over Budget Concerns

Seth Rogen and James Franco put out a high quality buddy stoner action film back in 2008 called Pineapple Express. You’ve probably heard of it. Heck, maybe you even have it in your DVD collection.

The film was a massive success, grossing over $100 million at the box office against a $26 million budget.

It has since developed a cult following, and that following is going to be very disappointed to hear they were screwed out of a sequel.

In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Rogen said that while the studio was open to the idea, they wouldn’t work with them on the budget.

We tried to make one and thanks to the Sony hack you can actually find the email when Sony decided to kill the movie and not make it/ It was something we were very open to several years ago, but Sony was not that interested in it. I think we probably wanted too much money. Studios, they don’t like giving away money. Weird thing.

According to reports, Apatow wanted a $50 million budget for the sequel, and the studio was set on $45 million.

Honestly, $45 million doesn’t sound that bad, especially for a comedy film. That’s a lot of money. I mean, what’s the difference between $50 and $45 million, really? One less stunt?

I think if they really wanted to, they could have made the movie.

Christopher Nolan’s Upcoming ‘Tenet’ Film Will Reportedly Rock A Budget Over $200 Million

Budgets north of $200 million are not unheard of. Heck, almost every superhero film has a budget close to or above the $200 million mark.

But it’s extremely rare to find an original film with a budget that huge.

We found one though. According to recent reports, Christopher Nolan’s new action flick ‘Tenet‘ will cost more than $200 million to make, and that’s before you add in the marketing campaign.

Nolan is, of course, one of the few people on the planet who could command such an enormous budget for an original movie that isn’t based on a popular IP. Collider’s sources put the number at $205 million.

Nolan is no stranger to big budget films. ‘Inception‘ worked with a budget of $160 million and ‘Interstellar‘ had a similar $165 million budget.

Little is known about Tenet beyond the fact that it’s a high-stakes epic set within the world of international espionage, but given the budget, you can expect plenty of spectacle.

The film is expected to hit theaters July 17, 2020.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Might Have A $26 Million Opening, According To Experts…BUT WE THINK THE NUMBER WILL BE HIGHER!

Crazy Rich Asians‘ will hit theaters tonight (August 15th) and early tracking had it bringing home around $20 million during its five-day opening this weekend. The updated reports now claim it could make up to $26 million, which would easily be enough to take the top spot at the box office.

I believe it’ll make at least $30 million. It has a lot of momentum. Not only do people want to go out and support this movie because it’s the first studio movie in years to feature a predominately Asian-American cast.

But people also want to see it just because it looks like a good movie. It’s currently sitting at a comfortable 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Crazy Rich Asians worked with a $30 million budget, so if it’s able to bring home $30 million in its opening weekend, well, that would be a HUGE story. The only thing working against this movie is the fact that it’s a romcom. They have struggled at the box office the past few years.

But I think the need for greater diversity on the big screen and the rave reviews will help this movie a lot.

OUCH: Gerard Butler’s ‘Geostorm’ Might Lose As Much As $100 Million

This might be one of the greatest flops of the year. Gerard Butler’s disaster movie ‘Geostorm‘ worked with a budget of $120 million (including $15 million for reshoots) and was scheduled to be released over a year ago.

It finally hit theaters this past weekend, and it did not perform well. It made just $14.7 million in the states, and has reportedly only brought home $66.8 million worldwide. According to box office experts, the break-even point for Geostorm is around $325 million, and with it only making $66.8 million so far, the future does not look good.

They say Warner Bros. is hoping the film can at least bring in $200 million worldwide, but even that seems like a stretch at the moment. If it can bring in $200 million, then the studio will only be looking at a $100 million loss. We say only because it could have been much worse if the studio went hard with the film’s promotion.

“WB cut its marketing budget for the weather-themed catastrophe movie after pushing back the release date three times from March 2016 to this past weekend, when no Thursday preview screenings were held. It didn’t help that critics gave it a 13 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.”

Surprisingly, this movie is only the second biggest flop for Warner Bros. this year. You may remember the disaster that was King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, which worked with a budget of $175 million. Experts claim the film might have resulted in a $150 million loss.

Luc Besson’s ‘Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets’ Is The Most Expensive French Film Ever

Geez. The folks at EuropaCorp are putting everything on the table with Luc Besson’s upcoming sci-fi epic Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets.

According to CinEuropa, the film (which is a 100% French production) costs 197 million Euros to make, which equals out to around $210 million. Just so you get the picture, the third film in the Transformers franchise had a budget of just $195 million.

Valerian is officially the most expensive production in French film history, and it’s not even really close. The previous number one spot was held by Asterix at the Olympic Games, which was made for a little under $83 million. By the way, that film did not perform well. It received an award for worst French film made in 2007.

Valerian’s insane budget shouldn’t be too surprising. It’s a sci-fi film for one. That’s always going to increase the budget. In addition to that, it’s also packed with an extremely talented cast: Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Cara Delevingne, Dane DeHaan and Rihanna.

It’s difficult to see how the production company is going to get their money back. I don’t see this movie pulling in over $400 million (it’s often said that a film needs to make twice its production budget to break even) at the box office.

We’ll see what happens. There are a lot of people excited about this movie. If it gets off to a great start, with positive reviews from critics, then it’ll be set up for a nice run.

But if not?

‘Kong’ Grabs The Top Spot At The Box Office, But Will It Be Enough To Make The Movie A Success?

As expected by nearly everyone, ‘Kong’ was king, grabbing the top spot at the box office this past weekend. Most people predicted it would come in at around $50 million, and it ended up doing a little better than that.

Kong: Skull Island took home $61 million during its opening weekend, which is a great number, but we must remember how much money was spent on this movie.

It cost around $180 million to make and there was an additional $130 million spent on marketing. That’s over $300 million right there, so is the $61 million opening enough to get the studio excited?

Probably not, mainly because the international numbers don’t look as hot. It took home just $81.6 million from 65 markets. To give you an example of how that ranks against its competitors, Logan brought home $152 million internationally during its opening weekend, and an impressive $70 million in its second week.

So yeah, the studio is probably a little disappointed, but when you spend over $300 million on a movie, you have to know there are some huge risks involved.

The good news is that after its run in theaters, it’ll probably come close to getting all those coins back. Also, it’s getting mostly positive reviews from critics and the audience, so we’re going to call it a success.

Jurassic World 2 Director Reveals The Budget For The Sequel Will Be $260 Million!

jura

It’s expensive to make a Hollywood blockbuster. We all know this. The first Jurassic World film worked with a budget of $150 million, which is obviously a lot of money. But it ended up being worth it for the studio, considering the movie made over $1 billion worldwide.

And thanks to the great success of the first movie, the upcoming sequel will be working with a budget of $260 million. That’s $110 million more than Jurassic World. We’re not sure why they need so much more money for this second film, but it definitely gives director Juan Antonio Bayona more freedom. He can basically do anything he wants with this sequel.

There are no limits. Bayona recently spoke with Spanish magazine El Pais Seminal, and he revealed that the sequel does have an official title. He didn’t release the name, but he did promise an announcement would be coming soon.

And earlier in the month, he told LRM that he’d like to stay truthful to the legacy of Steven Spielberg

“I grew up watching Steven Spielberg movies and I love those movies and the legacy, so it’s a question of being truthful to the legacy and at the same time, bringing new stuff that people will appreciate.”

Both Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will return to star in the sequel. It’s scheduled to be released June 22, 2018, so you still have over a year to wait.

‘Super Troopers 2’ Raises $4.4 Million During Indiegogo Campaign, Filming Starts This Summer!

We knew a second Super Troopers would be happening less than 30 hours after the comedy troupe Broken Lizard launched their crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. Fans of the first movie hit the initial goal of $2 million in just 26 hours.

But that $2 million was the minimum amount needed to fund the movie. They really needed more money to make the sequel even better than the first film, so the campaign continued for 30 days. And thanks to the awesome perks being offered by the comedy team, the impressive total climbed to $4.4 million.

To make sure the total went over the $3.5 million mark, Broken Lizard announced they would release their first movie Tin Foil Monkey Agenda exclusively to the thousands of contributors.

Thanks to the amount of effort they put into this campaign, they were able to produce the second most successful crowdfunding campaign for a movie. It fell just a little short of the $5.7 million record held by the Veronica Mars movie.

Super Troopers 2 will go into pre-production next month, and filming will begin this summer in the Northeast. And if you were one of the over 50,000 people who contributed to the campaign, you will be receiving a lot of updates from the set.

It should be exciting to see how everything plays out. The first film grossed $23 million worldwide on a $1.2 million budget.
