After the great success of ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ the studio announced that they’re already developing a sequel, and original director Jon M. Chu is set to return.
Warner Bros. also announced most of the creative team will be returning, including screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim. As most of you know, Crazy Rich Asians grabbed the number one spot at the box office last weekend, bringing home a five-day total of $35 million. It was the biggest opening for a romantic comedy in years.
“The groundbreaking film arrives as Hollywood is being pressured to feature greater diversity on screen. ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ has been lauded as the first studio film in over 25 years since 1993’s ‘Joy Luck Club’ to feature a nearly all Asian-American cast.”
No word on what the sequel will cover, but one thing is for sure, America is ready for it. You all know I’m not a fan of sequels, and I’d rather the studio give them money to make a brand new film, but you have to take what you can get sometimes.
Creating a successful Asian-American FRANCHISE would be groundbreaking, so in this case (and this case only) I say bring on the sequels!
