You might want to read the list of rules theater chains across the U.S. are sending out before you design that amazing costume you had planned for Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening night.
AMC Theaters, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark are taking extra precautions after the multiple theater shootings that have happened in the past few years. AMC is offering up some warnings to Star Wars fans, making it clear they won’t be afraid to turn some people away.
“AMC does not permit weapons or items that would make other guests feel uncomfortable or detract from the movie-going experience. Guests are welcome to come dressed in costume, but we do not permit masks. In short, bring your lightsaber, turn it off during the movie, and leave the blaster and Darth Vader mask at home.”
Basically, don’t wear a costume that hides your face. And even though they say no weapons, it looks like they will allow you to bring your lightsaber, which is actually something Cinemark warns against doing…
“Star Wars costumes are welcome. However, no face coverings, face paint, or simulated weapons (including lightsabers/blasters) will be allowed in the building.”
And Regal Cinemas have pretty much put out the same rules, announcing on their Twitter account that costumes are welcome, but you can’t cover your face or bring in “weapon-like props.”
Even with the early warnings, there will still be a lot of confusion in December. AMC’s statement leaves the door open by saying, “or items that would make other guests feel uncomfortable.” That’s intentionally vague. Say you are allowed inside the theater, but then someone inside complains about something on your costume, you might be asked to take it off.
