Never Turn Your Back On Family: ‘Fate of the Furious’ Breaks Worldwide Box Office Records

It looks like Vin Diesel knew what he was doing when he decided to continue the Fast & Furious franchise. Even though the films are caricatures of what they once were, fans continue to pack the theaters every time a new installment is released.

The eighth film (Fate of the Furious) in the franchise was released this past weekend and it broke several records at the worldwide box office.

It took home an estimated $532.5 million worldwide to set the record for highest global box office opening ever. One interesting thing about this is that the film actually dropped off in North America.

You’ll remember that Furious 7 took home $147.2 million during its opening weekend in 2015. Fate of the Furious opened to just $100.2 million here in the states. It was the international market that saved the film.

It earned a ridiculous $432.3 million internationally in 63 foreign markets. $190 million of that coming from China, where the franchise is more popular than ever. That’s obviously great news for the franchise, but the studio is probably still a little disappointed by the decline here in the US.

Mainly because Hollywood studios only take 25% of Chinese ticket sales. According to Variety, that’s roughly half of what they earn in most major markets.

But when you’re bringing in a total of $532.5 million in your opening weekend, 25% vs. 50% doesn’t really matter as much.
