Movie Fans On Twitter Demand Release Of The Rumored “Butthole Cut” Of ‘Cats’

Before the coronavirus, there was Cats. The bizarre film adaptation of the hit musical was released in late 2019 and its momentum carried over to 2020.

The movie ended up being so terrible that it was kinda…entertaining? People were having special viewings of the film. It was a movement of sorts.

And just as it was about to fade away, someone on Twitter claimed to know of a “butthole” cut of the film.

A VFX producer friend of a friend was hired in November to finish some of the 400 effects shots in @catsmovie. His entire job was to remove CGI buttholes that had been inserted a few months before. Which means that, somewhere out there, there exists a butthole cut of Cats,’

The tweet went viral and now people are demanding to see this glorious butthole cut of the film. I mean, the world is ending, why not give us one final gift?

If you’d like to contribute to the madness, keep spreading the “#ReleaseTheButtholeCut” on Twitter.

The studio has not confirmed that this butthole cut exists, but we have to believe it does. We need this more than ever right now.

‘Cats’ Could Lose $100 Million After Terrible Box Office Performance

We told you last week that Universal’s big-screen adaptation of ‘Cats‘ was not performing well at the box office. The reviews for this movie have been terrible. It sits at a 19% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and some critics called it the worst film of the yer.

The movie, which was directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper, has made just $38 million globally after two weeks inside theaters.

After its disappointing $6.5 million domestic debut ahead of Christmas, ‘Cats’ failed to gain any traction during the busiest time of year for moviegoing. In its sophomore outing, the film was relegated to No. 9 on box office charts, scraping together $8.7 million over the five-day holiday frame.

Cats cost $100 million to produce and set the studio back an additional $100 million for global marketing and distribution fees.

Insiders say Universal could lose $100 million in total, which would be a pretty huge flop.

The good news is that the studio had some success earlier this year with ‘Hobbs & Shaw‘ and How To Train Your Dragon 3, which combined to make well over $1 billion.

So yeah, they can handle this $100 million loss.

Box Office Failure Of The Year? ‘Cats’ Makes Just $6.5 Million During Opening Weekend

We all knew ‘Cats‘ wasn’t going to perform well at the box office after being slammed by nearly every critic in the world. The movie was doomed from the very first trailer.

But still, there was some hope that it would surprise everyone and bring in decent numbers.

That did not happen though. ‘Cats’ made just $6.5 million during its opening weekend. That’s pretty damn terrible considering it worked with a budget of $100 million, and that’s before marketing and distribution fees.

On paper, bringing ‘Cats’ to the big screen seems like an obvious choice. The stage show is bizarre, sure, but it became a global phenomenon and endured on Broadway and beyond for years to great financial success.

But after the creepy trailer and the poor reviews, people just lost interest. In fact, I would argue it would have received even less than $6.5 million had there not been such negative press.

People wanted to see just how bad the movie was, ya’ know? It was almost like a special event. It probably helped push the movie over the $6 million mark.

Meanwhile, the latest Star Wars film made over $175 million.
