It’s been a little over ten years since the fifth installment in the ‘Final Destination‘ franchise was released. Final Destination 5 was released in 2011, and it was pretty successful. Not only did critics enjoy it, but the general audience as well, bringing in over $150 million at the box office against a $40 million budget.
You would have thought the studio would get right to work on a sixth film, but it never happened.
That’s about to change though. It’s being reported that ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home‘ director Jon Watts has boarded ‘Final Destination 6‘ as a producer. Apparently, he had a story idea for this sixth film and wrote a treatment for it.
The studio loved it, and now the script is being written by Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick. Watts’ wife/producing partner Dianne McGunigle also serves as a producer.
Watts released the following statement:
Both Dianne and I have been massive fans of ‘Final Destination’ from the very beginning. So to be able to have a hand in crafting a new story with the original team and New Line is going to be both fun and exciting.
In total, the five previous films have grossed over $650 million at the worldwide box office. If this sixth film properly revives the franchise, it’s possible they could continue releasing more installments, bringing it up over the $1 billion mark, which few franchises have done.
