‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Fails To Take Over Number One Spot At Box Office, ‘Shang-Chi’ Stays At The Top

Wow. We should probably call it the Shang-Chi box office at this point, because the Marvel/Disney superhero flick just had its fourth consecutive weekend at the top.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ brought in another $13.3 million in ticket sales this past weekend, bringing its domestic total to $196.5 million, which is a pandemic record. Globally, the movie has made over $360 million, so it’s a huge win for Marvel.

The same can’t be said for Universal Pictures adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen. Sadly, the flick was hit with some terrible reviews from critics, which basically set it up for failure.

It collected just $7.5 million in its debut weekend. Experts had expected at least $10 million, so it’s certainly a disappointment for the studio.

The good news is that the film was made on a budget of $28 million, so even if they don’t make much above $20 million, it still won’t be that much of a loss.

Meanwhile, ‘Free Guy‘ came in at third again, with an impressive $4.1 million. We say impressive because it’s been inside theaters for nearly two months now, and it’s still bringing in millions. It’s made over $300 million at the box office, which is a pretty incredible showing for an original film. And of course, the studio is already planning on a sequel.

Looking to this coming weekend, can any film take down Shang-Chi? The answer is yes. Venom: Let There Be Carnage will be released, along with Addams Family 2 and Many Saints of Newark. So yeah, Shang-Chi won’t be on top for long.

Watch The First Trailer For The Adaptation Of Broadway Musical ‘Dear Evan Hansen’

If you weren’t able to get tickets to watch ‘Dear Evan Hansen‘ on stage, you’ll be happy to know Hollywood has made a film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical.

The musical opened back in 2016 and became a fan favorite almost overnight. It won six Tony Awards, including best musical and a best actor in a musical award for lead actor, Ben Platt.

And we’re happy to report that Platt has returned for this feature.

The story follows Evan Hansen, an anxious and isolated high school student who writes letters to himself. Evan’s classmate Connor Murphy gets a hold of one of his letters and dies by suicide with the note in his pocket, leading Connor’s parents to believe it was a suicide note addressed to Evan. Soon, Evan gets caught in a complicated lie, pretending to have been Connor’s friend and forming a fabricated relationship with the Murphy family.

Stephen Chbosky directed this feature, working on a script from Steven Levenson, who actually wrote the book that inspired the musical.

In addition to Platt, this film stars Amy Adams, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg and Julianne Moore.

It’s scheduled to hit theaters in September. Check out the trailer below…

According to the report, Dever will be playing the classmate’s sister, Zoe, who begins dating Hansen.

The musical was a huge hit and was nominated for nine Tonys.
