James Gunn Is Returning To The Director’s Chair, Will Direct Suicide Squad 2

Back in June of 2018, James Gunn was fired by Disney/Marvel and it was announced he would not return to for the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. They fired him after controversial tweets he posted years ago resurfaced.

It was a pretty shocking move at the time because the entire cast sent a letter to the studio in full support of Gunn. But still, the studio claimed they had no choice.

Fast forward nearly eight months later, and Gunn is set to make a big return. According to the reports, the filmmaker will direct the second Suicide Squad movie. He was already writing the sequel, so it kinda makes sense for him to direct, but many people didn’t know if Warner Bros. would be comfortable with it. Obviously they are.

“The pic has the title of The Suicide Squad and is not being labeled a direct sequel but as a relaunch. The 2016 original movie featured the characters Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter prison sentences.

Sources say that Gunn’s focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors. Sources also say that the project is also very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies.”

It’s interesting because Marvel/Disney is battling DC/Warner Bros, and now Gunn will have played for both sides. It’s like your favorite player being traded to the team you hate most.

Suicide Squad 2 is expected to hit theaters in August 2021.
