‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Brings In $143 Million During Opening Weekend

Well, Disney/Marvel’s latest standalone film featuring Chris Hemsworth’s Thor character slammed into theaters this past weekend, and it easily grabbed the number one spot.

Thor: Love and Thunder was released inside nearly 4,400 theaters across the country, bringing in a respectable $143 million. We used “respectable” instead of “impressive” because that $143 million total is actually a little lower than most projections.

Most people had the film bringing in at least $150 million, with some experts projecting a total closer to $170 million.

But still, $143 million is nothing to sneeze at.

Thor 4 enjoyed a bigger start than its predecessor, 2017’s quirky action-comedy ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ which opened to $123 million in North America. ‘Love and Thunder’ also notched the third-biggest opening weekend of the year behind ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ ($145 million) and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ ($185 million).

So we doubt Disney is losing any sleep over a $143 million debut. In total, it’s already made $302 million across the globe, which puts it above the $250 million production budget. It cost an additional $100 million to promote, so they’ll probably be in the green by next weekend.

Meanwhile, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ manages to stay in the box office conversation. It came in third place with another $15.5 million. It’s made $597 million just in North America alone. It needs just $3 million more to become one of 12 movies to ever cross the $600 million mark in North America.
