‘Morbius’ Has A Solid Opening, Wins Weekend Box Office With Ease

Jared Leto’s ‘Morbius‘ became a bit of a meme on Twitter this past weekend, with people roasting the film for being terrible. It has a paltry 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes; however, the audience score sits at 70%.

Additionally, the movie made $39.1 million during its opening weekend, which was more than good enough for first place at the box office. Most experts were predicting a $40 million opening, so it looks like they were right on the money.

Some people were concerned the bad reviews would keep people away, but comic book fans are incredibly loyal. At this point, they’d go watch someone take a dump for three hours if that person was wearing a cape.

Morbius made $44.9 overseas, so it has a global total of $84 million, which is not bad considering the budget was reportedly around $75 million. It’s worth noting that does not include marketing costs, so they’ll probably need to make well over $100 million total to get their money back.

It should be able to cross the $100 million mark rather easily, but it will face tougher competition next weekend with the scheduled release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Sony/Marvel Hoping For $40 Million-Plus Opening Weekend For ‘Morbius’

Jared Leto is getting his chance to carry a comic book film in the upcoming Sony/Marvel production, Morbius.

The antihero action flick, which stars Leto as Spider-Man’s eventful enemy, is expected to open inside over 3,500 theaters across North America this weekend, and box office experts are predicting it to bring in between $40 and $50 million.

Sony’s own predictions are closer to $30 million, which is probably their attempt to avoid any disappointment if the movie can’t break the $40 million mark.

In the case of ‘Morbius,’ a debut near $30 million would throw cold water on the studio’s grander attempts to fashion a commercially viable rival to Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. After ‘Morbius,’ Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters is chugging along with standalone stories on ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and ‘Madame Web,’ featuring Dakota Johnson.

A $30 million opening would be similar to Warner Bros’ opening for ‘Birds of Prey‘ starring Margot Robbie. The movie brought in $33 million during its opening weekend and made just $84 million total in North America. It made over $200 million worldwide, with a budget of around $100 million, not including marketing costs.

The budget for ‘Morbius’ is reportedly around $75 million, so it doesn’t have to make quite as much as Birds of Prey to be considered a success.

Spider-Man Spinoff Film ‘Morbius’ Has Its Release Date Pushed Back By A Few Months

Some disappointing news for all you comic book fans out there. You’ll have to wait a little longer to watch Jared Leto in the Spider-Man spinoff film, Morbius.

The movie, which is part of Sony’s Spider-Man cinematic universe, was scheduled to hit theaters January 28, 2022. It had already been delayed several times before. It was first scheduled to be released way back in July of 2020, but of course COVID-19 screwed everything up.

Then it was scheduled for March 19, 2021, then October 8, then January 2022, and now finally April 1, 2022, which kinda feels like some weird joke. April Fools, really? Is this when they plan to tell everyone they lost all footage from the movie and it’s never going to be released?

Provided this movie actually gets released in April, it’ll feature Leto playing antihero Michael Morbius, “who attempts a desperate gamble in order to treat a rare blood discoed, one that makes him more familiar with a darkness inside of him.”

In addition to Leto, this flick will star Michael Keaton, Matt Smith, Tyrese Gibson and Adria Arjona.

With the success of Spider-Man, Sony is hoping Morbius can get at least a little taste of that success, but if they continue pushing it back, people are going to lose interest.
