The ‘Jumanji’ Sequel Shocks Everyone By Bringing In Over $60 Million During Its Opening Weekend

We told you last week that Sony was trying to downplay the opening weekend projections for ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’

They were reportedly expecting a $35 million opening. Other experts were thinking closer to $45 or $50 million.

Well, the sequel shocked everyone by bringing in $60.1 million over its opening weekend. The first film ‘Welcome to the Jungle‘ made only $36 million during its opening weekend, but then went on to make over $800 million at the worldwide box office.

Overseas, Jumanji 2 kicked off with $85 million for a global start of $145 million. The movie opened in a few foreign territories last weekend, bringing receipts to $152 million at the international box office and $213 million worldwide.

It’s certainly off to a good start, but will it have the staying power that the original film had? That remains to be seen. Critics aren’t as hot on this sequel, but the audience is responding well to it.

And while it was a good start for Jumanji, both ‘Black Christmas‘ and Clint Eastwood’s ‘Richard Jewell‘ failed to impress. They both were expected to earn at least $10 million. Instead, they didn’t even combine for $10 million.

‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ Could Make Up To $50 Million During Opening Weekend

Jumanji: The Next Level‘ the sequel to the 2017 hit ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle‘ will hit theaters December 13, 2019.

And according to the early tracking reports, it could make between $40 to $50 million during its opening weekend. A $50 million opening would be decent. We say decent because the movie is working with a budget over $125 million.

But what’s interesting is that Sony is being cautious with their in-house predictions. They claim they’re only expecting around $35 million.

And honestly, that would be a little disappointing. I mean, the movie stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Nick Jonas, Danny Glover, Danny DeVito, and worked with a pretty high budget! A $35 million opening would be *insert fart noise here*

‘Welcome to the Jungle’ made $36 million in its opening weekend, but it had a long life inside theaters, thanks to the positive word of mouth. It ended up almost making $1 billion worldwide.

So if this sequel does open to just $35 million, the studio better pray that word of mouth carries it once again.

‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ Releases First Trailer, And The Crew Is Back Together

We ended last week by showing you a trailer featuring Dwayne Johnson, and we begin this week by showing you another trailer featuring Johnson.

The first trailer for ‘Jumanji: The Next Level‘ has been released, a direct sequel to the 2017 hit film, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black have all returned for this sequel, which features Hart and Johnson trying to put on their best impressions of Danny DeVito and Danny Glover.

In the upcoming adventure the gang returns to Jumanji only to find the video game world looks a little different. The twist this time around is that the grandfathers (played by Danny DeVito and Danny Glover) of two original players get transported into the game as Johnson and Hart’s avatars. The new players will have to brave the elements to escape the dangers that lurk and save Jumanji.

The whole body swapping gag was funny the first time, but will it deliver for a second time? I don’t know. This trailer got a chuckle out of me, but I’m not sure it can sustain itself for the entire film.

Jumanji: The Next Level will hit theaters December 13, 2019. Check out the trailer below…
