Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ was a surprise box office smash this past year. It was the first movie to really break the pandemic curse. So far, it’s made over $430 million at the worldwide box office, which is not bad considering the budget is thought to be around $175 million.
And thanks to the success, Marvel/Disney has ordered a sequel. The news was made official this week, and we’re happy to report that Destin Daniel Cretton will return to write and direct. He’s also in development on a Marvel series for Disney Plus.
In fact, Cretton is in real good with Marvel Studios. He recently signed an exclusive multi-year overall deal with the company. This deal will allow him to create both TV and film projects for Marvel Studios. Basically, he’s rolling in the money now.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had this to say about Cretton…
Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney Plus, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.
We don’t know a lot about the upcoming series for Disney Plus, but sources say it’s expected to be a comedy.
We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
