Anthony Mackie Says Marvel’s First Stand-Alone Black Superhero Movie Doesn’t Need A Black Director

If Anthony Mackie woke up a week ago and said, “I want to make the headlines this upcoming week!” He should celebrate right now with a few drinks because he hit a grand slam. Just a few days ago, the 37-year-old actor seemed to endorse Donald Trump, claiming he was an easy sell and would throw the best victory party. After receiving a ridiculous amount of hate on Twitter, Mackie sent out a tweet claiming he was just joking.

Now he’s making headlines again for something he said during an interview with The Daily Beast. He was asked if it was important to find a black director to direct Marvel’s first black superhero film, Black Panther.

This is what he had to say…

“As a director your job is to tell a story. You know, they didn’t get a horse to direct Seabiscuit! The thing is I don’t think the race of the director has to do with their ability to tell a story. I think it’s all about the director’s ability to be able to relate to that story and do it justice. I think men can direct women, and two of my greatest work experiences were with female directors. So I think it all depends. May the best man, or woman, win.”

Obviously, that horse comment has been shared a lot on Twitter, and a lot of people are once again throwing insults his way. Some of them are just as silly as Mackie’s Seabiscuit comment, but there are some good arguments out there…

As far as we know, horses haven’t been trying to write and direct movies in Hollywood for years, only to be turned away at the door because a bunch of pigs already dominate the space.

The fact is there needs to be more opportunities for black directors in the business, and directing Marvel’s first stand-alone black superhero movie is a perfect opening.
