This news was certainly unexpected. Deadline reported yesterday that Simon Pegg, the actor who played Scotty in Star Trek: Into Darkness, will be co-writing the new Star Trek film with Doug Jung. And while this news is surprising, it’s actually a really smart move.
Pegg has loads of experience in the writing department (Shaun of the Dead, Run Fatboy Run, Hot Fuzz, Paul, The World’s End), and he’s also a huge sci-fi fan. Plus, he’s actually going to be in the movie! If the film falls flat, he will have to take some responsibility and endure a lot of criticism.
Hopefully this move gets Star Trek 3 back on track for its 2016 release. As we reported last year, things got a little hectic after Roberto Orci decided he wasn’t ready to direct the film. However, after a little bit of searching, Paramount managed to get things rolling again by replacing Orci with Fast & Furious director, Justin Lin.
Now that we have a director and two writers on the ship, things should start progressing at a faster pace. And really, they need to speed things up a bit. As we mentioned, the film is scheduled to be released in 2016. Simon Pegg and Doug Jung have a lot of work to do before then.
