The Equalizer shocked everyone when it hit theaters back in 2014. Yeah, it starred Denzel Washington, so people expected it to be successful, but no one thought it would take home almost $200 million at the box office against a budget of just $55 million.
It was a huge success with critics and fans. This resulted in the studio confirming there would be a sequel. The original release date was scheduled to be September 29, 2017. Fans have been questioning this release date for a few months now because there hadn’t been any information about the film.
Well, we now have some information. We got bad news and good news. The bad news is that the sequel will not be released in 2017. The good news is that a sequel will definitely happen. During a recent Q&A session, producer Todd Black told fans production on the sequel would begin around Labor Day next year.
We also know Denzel Washington will return, and director Antoine Fuqua will also return. Apparently, the delay came when Fuqua realized he wasn’t completely happy with the sequel script. He went back to fix the errors, and it pushed back the production.
But the script is done now. It’s all in place.
“So Equalizer 2 will start shooting in September of next year, maybe earlier depending on another movie that we’re shooting with Denzel before that. We’re going to do a little bit more work and we’re going to go into casting right after that for his nemesis.”
The new release date hasn’t been released, but it’ll likely be in 2018. We’ll keep you posted.
