It was ‘Gemini Man‘ vs ‘The Addams Family‘ on Thursday night, and Will Smith’s Gemini Man won the battle.
The sci-fi thriller premiered with a $1.6 million Thursday night preview, which was just a little ahead of The Addams Family $1.3 million haul.
What does a $1.6 million Thursday night mean for its opening weekend? Well, Brad Pitt’s ‘Ad Astra‘ film had $1.5 million in Thursday preview earnings, and it went on to make $19 million at the box office, so it’s possible Gemini Man breaks the $20 million mark.
Sadly, it probably won’t take the top spot at the box office this weekend. The ‘Joker’ will most likely top the box office again after bringing in nearly $100 million last weekend.
Gemini Man debuts at 3,642 locations, with more than a third of those screening the film in high frame rate 3D+ format, employed by director Ang Lee to show Smith alongside a younger clone of himself. After a nearly 20-year gestation to the big screen, Gemini Man is aiming to make between $24 million and $29 million from 3,642 venues. Paramount and Skydance Media shelled out $138 million to invest in those hyperrealistic visuals, while Fosun and Alibaba helped finance the movie.
With a $138 million budget, they better hope this film does well overseas as well. It could be another flop for Smith, who has had a tough time at the box office lately.
By the way, the critics aren’t liking this movie. It currently has a paltry 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
