Jim Cummings is an interesting product of Hollywood, or anti-Hollywood. He’s an actor/writer/director who is perhaps best known for his indie film, Thunder Road, which actually started out as a short film in 2016. Following the success of the short film, a feature movie was made and released in 2018.
Since then, he’s produced several movies and even landed a role in the most recent ‘Halloween Kills’ film, but he hadn’t directed again.
That changed this past year though. Cummings co-wrote/co-directed the upcoming film, The Beta Test, alongside PJ McCabe. And just like in Thunder Road, Cummings also has the starring role.
The satire follows an engaged talent rep who accepts a mysterious offer to engage in a consensual and anonymous sexual encounter — only to face severe repercussions as his work and home life fall apart in the aftermath. The filmmakers called the project a dark thriller about the problematic nature of the entertainment industry and humanity’s willingness to jeopardize our happiness in small and constant decisions.
The film, which is being distributed by IFC Films played at the Berlin International Film Festival to great reviews. It currently sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It’ll be released in select theaters/on demand on November 5, 2021. You won’t want to miss this one.
