Most people will be interested in this movie because it has Shia LaBeouf attached to it, which is understandable. He’s a rather engaging star, even if it’s for the wrong reason sometimes.
But the most important part of The Peanut Butter Falcon is Shia’s co-star, Zack Gottsagen. His role is extremely important because he’s playing a young man with Down syndrome.
Gottsagen himself has Down syndrome, which is an important step in the right direction for casting in Hollywood. You’ll often see an able-bodied actor playing a character that has some sort of disability. It’s always been a bit controversial considering there are numerous actors out there who actually have disabilities.
Thankfully, The Peanut Butter Falcon gets it right, and judging by the reaction from the early premiere at SXSW Film Festival, the casting decision paid off.
In the film, Zack’s character escapes from a nursing home to follow his dream of attending the professional wrestling school of his idol. During his journey, he meets up with a “small time outlaw” played by Shia LaBeouf.
In addition to LaBeouf and Gottsagen, this film also stars Dakota Johnson and Thomas Haden Church. It’s expected to hit theaters August 9, 2019.
