The last movie musical to hit theaters was a great success. La La Land won several awards and made over $400 million at the box office. It made musicals cool again.
Hugh Jackman and 20th Century Fox are hoping they have similar success with the P.T. Barnum-inspired musical, The Greatest Showman. The film, directed by Michael Gracey, features original songs written by the lyricists responsible for La La Land’s Oscar-winning tunes.
Jackman plays Barnum in the film, his character described as a “visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.” In addition to Jackman, Michelle Williams and Zac Efron will also star in the movie.
By the way, this is Gracey’s feature-length debut. That’s a pretty big deal. Before this, he was a commercial director and visual effects coordinator. Not many people are lucky/brave enough to make their feature-length debut with such a big project.
It’s scheduled to be released this Christmas, so make sure your grandmother stays awake for this one. Check out the first trailer below…
