Tyler Perry’s ‘Boo! A Madea Halloween’ Beats Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher Sequel At The Box Office

It was a pretty low weekend for all films at the box office, and that makes me happy because the big releases were all sequels. It’s always delightful to see a sequel fail.

The two films at the top of the box office failed to reach the $30 million mark. Tom Cruise and his action sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back made just $23 million this past weekend, which has to be a little disappointing because the film was heavily promoted.

The mostly negative reviews probably hurt the sequel a bit. It scored a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, and while the number one film at the box office received a 29% rating, it didn’t matter as much because it was a comedy.

Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween grabbed the top spot at the box office with $27.6 million. Not bad at all, considering its budget was just $20 million. It’s all going in the bank now and will probably help to produce another sequel soon.

And the data shows that the Madea franchise is expanding its audience. The films usually have an audience that’s around 85% African-American, this latest movie was at around 60%.

David Spitz, co-president of domestic distribution at Lionsgate told The Huffington Post the following…

“The film crossed over and it expanded the audience. Madea is such a beloved character and the timing helped. There are not many comedies in the marketplace right now and Halloween is right around the corner.”

Keep your eyes open for the next Madea film. Perry is going after all the holidays now. Watch out for A Madea Groundhog Day in Feb. 2018.
