Tom Holland Talks About How He Found Out He Was Cast As Spider-Man, And It’s Pretty Wild

Tom Holland is now known as Spider-Man, and he’s one of the hottest young actors in Hollywood, but just a few years back…his life was much different.

The world found out he was going to be the next Spider-Man back in June of 2015, and surprisingly, that’s when Holland found out as well.

During an interview for Variety’s Actors on Actors, the 24-year-old actor talked to fellow actor Daniel Kaluuya about the painful and extremely long audition process.

He auditioned for the role for a total of seven months, and during each round, they don’t tell you anything. Eventually, he got a call to do a screen test in Atlanta with Robert Downey Jr.

And even though there were six other actors also doing a screen test, Holland left feeling like he got the role.

There was me and six other kids, and [Robert] Downey [Jr.] was there, so we all tested with Downey, which was crazy. It’s the best audition I’ve ever done, him and I were riffing off each other. My agents told me that Marvel likes you to learn the words exactly — you can’t improvise. And then, on the first take, Downey just completely changed the scene. We started riffing with each other, and I mean, to sound like a bit of a dick, I rang my mum afterward and was like, ‘I think I’ve got it.’

Six weeks later, he (and just one other actor) got called to do a fight scene with Captain America.

And then a few weeks went by, and he hadn’t heard anything, so he thought maybe he didn’t end up getting the role. But then, as he was golfing with his father, he saw that Marvel had posted something about Spider-Man on their Instagram.

I got my computer, and my dog was sitting next to me. I type in ‘Marvel.’ I’ve still got the article saved on my computer. It said, ‘We would like to introduce our new Spider-Man, Tom Holland.’ I broke my computer, because I flipped it up in the air. It fell off my bed; my dog went nuts. I ran downstairs. I was telling my family, ‘I got the part! I got the part!’

The drama wasn’t finished though. He then remembered how Sony had just been hacked, and his brother was telling him that the news probably wasn’t real.

But finally, the studio called him to confirm the news, and the rest is history.
