‘The Gentlemen‘ is a bit of an odd film. It has such an impressive cast and it was directed by Guy Ritchie, but still…no one is really talking about it.
The crime comedy is being released this weekend, and on Thursday it made a modest $725,000 in its opening night previews. It did perform better than the horror flick ‘The Turning‘ which opened to just $425,000, despite being inside more locations.
The Gentlemen has been pegged to earn around $10 million when it debuts in 2,100 theaters. That would be a solid start, since STX shelled out $7 million to buy U.S. rights from Miramax. McConaughey stars as an American expat looking to cash out of the marijuana empire he built in London.
The movie currently sits at an okay 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and I think that’s par for the course for this film. It feels like one of those “okay” films, where you won’t be bored if you watch it, but you won’t really miss out on anything special if you don’t watch it.
In any event, neither ‘The Gentlemen’ nor ‘The Turning’ is expected to beat Bad Boys For Life this weekend. Experts say it could make another $30 million in its second weekend at the box office.
