We told you a few months ago that Sony was developing a sequel to Denzel Washington’s R-rated hit, The Equalizer, and now the studio has released an official release date for the film.
The Equalizer 2 is scheduled to hit theaters September 29, 2017. If all goes according to plan, the film will be released almost exactly three years after the original. And we know Washington isn’t exactly a fan of making sequels, but sources say he will be returning for this one. They wouldn’t be making this sequel if he wasn’t going to return.
We don’t know if director Antoine Fuqua will return, but it seems likely that he will. Washington and Fuqua obviously work extremely well together. They are currently working together to create The Magnificent Seven remake, and we know Fuqua had hopes of turning The Equalizer into a franchise, “I would be lying to you if I said I wouldn’t love for it to become a franchise, I would love for it to become a hit and all that great stuff.” The director told Screenrant.
Well, it’s officially a hit. Taking in $192 million at the worldwide box office. We’ll see what happens, but I don’t see why he wouldn’t return.
We will keep you posted. For now, rest easy knowing you will once again see Denzel kicking ass on the big screen.
