Zoe Kravtiz and Robert Pattinson killed it in the recent ‘The Batman‘ flick. Both stars are earning praise for their performances as Catwoman and Batman, respectively.
But during a recent interview in The Observer, Kravitz revealed she tried to land a role in Christopher Nolan’s’ The Dark Night Rises’ but was barred from auditioning because she was deemed too urban.
I don’t know if it came directly from Chris Nolan. I think it was probably a casting director of some kind, or a casting director’s assistant…Being a woman of color and being an actor and being told at that time that I wasn’t able to read because of the color of my skin, and the word urban being thrown around like that, that was what was really hard about that moment.
Yeah, that sucks. I mean, Kravitz is light-skinned, so if even she was too “urban” for the franchise, then damn. It kinda shows you much the industry has changed since then. The Dark Knight Rises was released in 2012, which truly feels like a different lifetime.
This isn’t the first time Kravitz has talked about this. In a 2015 interview with Nylon, she revealed the role she was trying to audition for was a smaller one, and that she couldn’t get inside the room for an audition because the film wasn’t “going urban” for the role.
Kravitz was confused:
What does that have to do with anything?’ I have to play the role like, ‘Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on with you?’
We’ll see if Nolan responds to this. If he does, it’ll probably be an, “I wasn’t aware of this” type comment.
