It’s Ice Cube vs Charlie Day In Hilarious Trailer For New Comedy Titled “Fist Fight” (VIDEO)

Are you looking for an outrageous comedy movie that will make you forget about all the troubles in the world for an hour or two? We got the perfect one for you. Charlie Day and Ice Cube are teaming up to create one of the most epic battles in movie history.

Fist Fight has a pretty simple story: a mild-mannered teacher (Day) does something to piss off the most feared teacher (Cube) in the school, and gets challenged to a fist fight following the last day of school.

This movie won’t win any awards, but it does look incredibly entertaining. The Day/Cube combination is also intriguing and fresh. They could have easily went with someone like Will Ferrell to play Day’s character.

In addition to Cube and Day, the movie also stars Jillian Bell, Tracy Morgan, Christina Hendricks and Dean Norris.

Director Richie Keen makes his feature film debut with this movie. He’s been hanging out on the TV side for most of his career, and regularly worked on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which explains the Charlie Day connection.

Check out the official synopsis and trailer below. It’s scheduled to hit theaters February 17, 2017.

“On the last day of the year, mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Day) is trying his best to keep it together amidst senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that put jobs on the line.  But things go from bad to worse when he accidentally crosses his much tougher and deeply feared colleague, Ron Strickland (Ice Cube), who challenges Campbell to an old-fashioned throw down after school.  News of the fight spreads like wildfire and ends up becoming the very thing this school, and Campbell, needed.”

Tracy Morgan Is Back, Lands First Movie Role Since Tragic Accident In 2014

Most of you probably saw Tracy Morgan‘s emotional appearance at the Emmy Awards a few days ago. It was a lovely moment seeing Morgan back on stage. Just hearing him joke about getting people pregnant again was enough to make me smile for a few days.

And now we have one more reason to continue smiling. 14 months after the tragic car accident that left his good friend dead, Morgan has decided to return to acting. He will join Charlie Day and Ice Cube in the comedy Fist Fight, which tells the story of two teachers (Day and Cube) who work in a terrible school system together. Day’s character is challenged to a fist fight by Cube’s character.

Dean Norris (Breaking Bad) plays the school’s principal, and the extremely hilarious Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street) will play a guidance counselor. If you want to see her amazing skills, just check out this video of her and Jonah Hill.

Who will Morgan be playing in the film? Well, according to Variety, Morgan will be playing a coach at the high school. Fist Fight was written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux.

Production on the film will start later this month in Atlanta. Also, be sure to catch Morgan as he returns to host Saturday Night Live on October 17, 2015.

Movie Review: Top Five (2014) – An all star cast delivers the very definition of comedic drama

Top five, Chris Rock Walking with Rosario Dawson

Chris Rock has a gift for comic realism. In his third turn in the director’s chair, he releases the wonderful comedy/drama Top Five.

In this movie, we see a realistic portrayal of an ageing comic looking to move into more serious lines of work. Andre Allen (Chris Rock) is a comic who made his money from playing campy character Hammy the Bear. Tired of his comedy roots, he chooses to make a dramatization of the 1791 Haitian Revolution. Of course, the New York Times pans the movie. Then, on the opening day, Andre gets the opportunity to spend time with Times writer Chelsea Brown (Rosario Dawson) thanks to pressure from his agent (Kevin Hart.)

This is an extremely well-cast, star studded movie. For once, when the casting agent blew their budget on big name stars, they knew what they were doing. No part is underplayed, from Gabriel Union’s reality show diva role, to Kevin Hart’s flustered manager, all the stars in this one, whether appearing as themselves on someone else, got a fair amount of funny screen time. It’s a veritable who’s who of iconic comedians.

While funny, the movie is also surprisingly realistic. In fact, many of the stars in this film have gone through the same issue that Andre is dealing with. They were previously joke or gag comics who want to be taken seriously by the world. For everyone who manages to make it, there are ten more who’s first efforts flop, much like Andre’s movie “Uprize!”

Of course, this movie isn’t 1000 percent perfect. In several instances, it becomes a bit disjointed and confusing. It’s a loud movie with a lot going on. But even in all that confusion, you want to see Andre succeed. And you want to know why Chelsea would bother to spend all day with a man who her newspaper had already thoroughly panned.

The direction was impressive, with the main focus being New York City, and the wide panning style makes the city breathtaking, while at the same time unflinchingly showing the more humble parts as well. In a way, it reminds me of an old Woody Allen movie. It doesn’t seem deep at first, with two characters running around New York doing silly things. But the longer you watch, the more you realize this is a deep movie. It gives you a lot to think about.

Despite the fact that this is a drama, there are still a lot of breaks from it due to the right kind of comedic timing. Chris Rock never stops being funny, but that hilarity becomes more of a self defense mechanism than it is part of him. Andre is probably one of the best comic characters I’ve seen in a long time.

One thing I like is that they made it clear that Andre’s movie was joke worthy, just by showing the poster; Chris Rock looking violent and brandishing a machete. Despite the serious nature of the film, it’s easy to see why people would laugh at it.

All in all, Top 5 is worth the watch. It is the very definition of comedic drama and is worth seeing just for the excellent ensemble cast. If it had the right distributor, this easily would have been a box office hit.

Top-Five-3-Chris-Rock-and-Rosario-Dawson

Chris Rock, as talented of a comedian as he is, has not been able to translate that talent into box office success. I take that back. He has not found success as a leading actor. As a supporting actor, I personally think his best movie was Lethal Weapon 4, or maybe as the mail guy in Boomerang….but let’s not forget Poochie in New Jack City.

But when it comes to playing the lead, we have box office blunders like, ‘Head of State’, ‘I think I love My Wife’, and ‘Bad Company’.

With his newest effort, entitled “Top Five” we might have turned the corner. A more mature, industry savvy Chris Rock wrote and directed this movie. He also recruited some A-list comedians including Tracy Morgan, Kevin Hart, Whoopi Goldberg and J.B. Smooth to help with the heavy lifting. During the Toronto Film Festival this movie created a lot of buzz and sparked a bidding war.

Paramount pictures won the distribution deal with a bid for $12.5 million, which was the biggest deal of the entire festival. Did I mention this movie is also Co-Produced by Jay Z and Kanye West, and the Music Producer is Quest Love.   With that much talent and experience plugged into all the right places, we could have a winner here folks.

[toggle title=”Official Movie Synopsis”]Written, directed by, and starring Chris Rock, “TOP FIVE” tells the story of New York City comedian-turned-film star Andre Allen, whose unexpected encounter with a journalist (Rosario Dawson) forces him to confront the comedy career—and the past—that he’s left behind. Movie Review: Box Trolls (2014) – Intelligent Animation with an Adorable Weirdness

The Boxtrolls Movie Image Gallery

The Box Trolls have been creeping me out since I was a child, which is why I was hesitant to see them. But as a parent, I feel responsible to review other children’s movies that I think parents might be dragged in too. It is my duty as a reviewer… no matter how much those friggen things might haunt my nightmares.

In this twisted horror movie, an innocent orphan boy named Egg is raised by a family of terrifying monsters made out of cardboard. Ok, so that’s my personal bias shining through. I can’t help it, these things really used creep me out. I don’t know why. When I was a kid, the book that this was based on, “Here Be Monsters” by Alan Snow was enough to give me nightmares for a week.

But something amazing happened when this came to the big screen. I no longer found the Box Trolls terrifying. In fact, they were surprisingly charming. The characters are almost something out of a Dickens novel, with the added weirdness that is simply adorable.

This team of editors had their work cut out for them and they did an admiral job. The stop-motion animation is completely fantastic. This weird, colorful world is creative, interesting and based on reality without being too realistic. Think along the lines of Nightmare Before Christmas in it’s strange, stop-motion take on an alternate universe.

Even the names of the characters are clever. The troll names are made of the things they’re made up of like Fish, Shoe, Oil Can, Egg, etc. They have a cheese based economy. It’s pretty much child centric world building at its best.

The story is well done and intriguing enough for adults with some potential digs at certain political parties. From Mr. Gristle (Tracy Morgan) who is using the Box Trolls as scapegoats to further his own political career, to the evil Archibald Snatcher (Ben Kingsley) who is intent on exterminating every last one of them, the bag guys are nefarious and surprisingly familiar.

This is one of those rare finds that’s actually enjoyable for adults as well. While it might be a bit scary for younger viewers, it’s still a fun, cute movie with a fish out of water twist.

Most enjoyable is Egg, the human adopted by the Box Trolls who really has no idea how humans interact with each other. Watching him trying to get along in the human world is sweet and hysterical.

It’s weird that I was ever scared of these things when I was little. Of course, part of that is on my mom for reading me a story about a group of monsters that steal children when I was five. But the more I got to know them, the more I got to like them.

It’s surprisingly political for such a simple movie, with a big focus on social standing and social climbing. It has a valuable moral and intelligent, but simplistic dialog. I’d dare call this the smartest animated film I’ve seen in a long time. If you are a parent, or even if you don’t have kids to drag you to this movie, Box Trolls is worth the watch.

Movie Review: Rio 2 (2014)

300px-Rio_2_poster_it's_on_in_the_amazonThis is no Frozen or Lego Movie

stars

I was really excited for the release of Rio 2, as I was such a big fan of the original. I was actually the creepy adult in the audience, who went to see it without a kid! But I’m very disappointed to say, Rio 2 fell short of expectations.

In Rio 2, we are reunited with Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), and Jewel (Anne Hathaway). The two now have children and have just moved to the wilds of the Amazon, where they discover a large group of endangered birds. As Blu struggles to fit in, he comes face to face with the movies first villain Big Boss (Miguel Ferrer), who apparently hates endangered species and tree huggers.

First, if a child’s movie is going to have an adult style agenda, then they need to make it fun for the adults to watch as well. In the first Rio, while the movie did seem to focus on the evils of endangered specials smuggling, they didn’t cram the agenda down our throats. Rio 2 plays out like a very poorly researched ‘save the planet’ documentary with musical numbers and talking birds.

rio-2-nigel-gabi-movie-hd-1920x1080

The movie is visually stunning and the animators took full advantage of the beautiful colors and adorable animals. I guess if you watched it on mute, it might be ok.

The plot is recycled from the first movie. In the original Rio, Blu was a fish out of water, a pampered house pet living in the suburbs. In Rio 2, he is a less pampered city bird, forced to move to the wild.

Also, I don’t remember quite as many musical numbers in the first one. While a song or two can help jazz up a movie, it really feels like the script was padded with musical numbers because they didn’t have enough material.

The movie did have its cute points, like Blu using a nerdy fanny pack with a GPS to travel, but it really isn’t anything new. The freshness and the humor in the last one is gone in this one, and the entire movie feels like a series of musical numbers.

new-Nico-Pedro-wallpaper-hd-rio2-movie-2014

rio-2-movie-2014-full-trailer-

The movie runs about 1 hour and 41 minutes. By my estimation, about 1 hour and 20 minutes were musical numbers, while the rest was just a bunch of jumbled plot points. There are too many things going on, and no one stops singing long enough to explain it.

It’s cute, it’s sweet and kids will love it. But it by no means stands out. This is no Frozen or Lego Movie. This is a recycled movie, with recycled characters, fleshed out with musical numbers. This is the kind of movie that you watch because your kids make you, and then forget about it.

Expect to see a Rio 3, and a Rio 4 and a Rio 5…This movie is a clear money grab, with producers trying to squeeze as much revenue and merchandising as they can out of the franchise. My guess will be the next movie will be a fish out of water story where Blu leaves the Amazon to go live somewhere else, where everyone will think he is a nerd.  Watch the official trailer below:
