The Walk – Movie Smack Talk

Do you have plans to watch The Walk this weekend at an IMAX theater near you? If so, you might want to pay extra for an empty popcorn container, because you might need to use it as a vomit bucket.

According to some reports from people who have already watched the film, director Robert Zemeckis can sleep easy knowing he nailed it. He said after the first screening at the New York Film Festival that he wanted to see people experiencing vertigo while watching the movie.

For those who don’t know, The Walk tells the story of Philippe Petit and his death-defying tightrope walk between the Twin Towers back in 1974. If you haven’t seen the trailer, you can click here to watch it, although, it looks 100% more terrifying when you see it inside a theater.

Anyway, as we mentioned in the title, Mr. Zemeckis got his wish. Journalist Mark Harris sent out the tweet you see below after watching a screening of the movie…

And he wasn’t the only one reporting problems. Denise Widman, board director of the Boston Jewish Film Festival also had some issues.

“The last 20 minutes of the film I had to look away a couple of times because of the sensation of the height. I felt a little bit queasy. I felt nervous. It was a tingling sensation and some anxiety.”

I don’t know about you, but this just makes me want to watch the movie even more. I was already planning a double feature with The Martian and Sicario. Now what am I supposed to do? I can’t pull off the triple ripple. My wallet isn’t that fat.

Cheers to that. Recently I have to admit that Hollywood has broken me down. I used to be a superhero movie purist. If the script deviated from the storyline, I used to be all up at arms. I used to get crazy on messages boards pointing out key differences; now I don’t care. Just make a good movie. I felt the same way about sequels. “Why can’t Hollywood just be original”. Now, I just hope it’s a good movie.

However, when it comes to direct remakes, I was actually sold on that idea first. That was because some movies, set in modern times, actually bring new life to the storylines. The key words being “Some movies”. The Thomas Crown Affair, True Lies, The Italian Job, Ocean’s 11 to just name a few. (Is it a coincidence that these are all heist movies?). Those are well done remakes that modernized classics and hence became modern classics. This feat is easier said then done.

Some movies are just so much a part of our generation and who we are, that the thought of touching them, would be like reinventing baseball. That is exactly how Robert Zemeckis feels about his work on Back to the Future.

Zemeckis not only directed the original along with the two sequels, he and co-writer Bob Gale own the rights to the films. At the age of 63, Zemeckis says that as long as he and Bob are alive, there will be no remakes on the film.

That can’t happen until both Bob and I are dead. And then I’m sure they’ll do it, unless there’s a way our estates can stop it.

I mean, to me, that’s outrageous. Especially since it’s a good movie. It’s like saying ‘Let’s remake Citizen Kane. Who are we going to get to play Kane?’ What folly, what insanity is that? Why would anyone do that?

Bob Gale was considering writing a Back to the Future IV but in honor of Michael j Fox decided not to do it. Without the original Marty McFly, it’s just not the same. I’m sure diehard fans will agree.

Zemeckis would go on to win an academy award for Who Framed Roger Rabbit and his work on Forrest Gump. With a networth of $50 million there is very little chance that a big studio check would change his mind about a remake of his baby.

His latest film to be released this year is entitled “The Walk” about the life of Philippe Petit, who attempted to walk across the Twin Towers in 1974. Joseph Gordon-Levitt will being playing the role as Petit. The film is due in theaters October 2^nd.
