The First Trailer For Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’ Is Here, Watch Matthew McConaughey And Idris Elba Battle It Out!

It’s a wonderful day for fans of Stephen King’s novel The Dark Tower. It hasn’t been easy making this film, and at times it looked like it might not ever be made.

But here we are. In just three months, The Dark Tower adaptation will hit theaters, and fans could not be more excited, especially after watching the first trailer.

The trailer was released this week. It stars Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba. They promoted the trailer by jumping on Twitter as their characters…

You can check out the official synopsis and trailer below. It will hit theaters August 4, 2017.

“Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), the last Gunslinger, is locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim (Matthew McConaughey), also known as the Man in Black. The Gunslinger must prevent the Man in Black from toppling the Dark Tower, the key that holds the universe together. With the fate of worlds at stake, two men collide in the ultimate battle between good and evil.”

Matthew McConaughey Explains Why He Chose ‘The Dark Tower’ Over Guardians Of The Galaxy 2

When casting for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, was going on, a huge name was being teased for the coveted role of Star-Lord’s father.

That name was Matthew McConaughey. He was the top choice to play the character and for a month or so, it looked like the deal was pretty much done. But as you all know by now, McConaughey passed on the role and Kurt Russell stepped in to take his place.

It was later revealed that the 47-year-old actor passed on the role because he wanted to work on the Stephen King adaption The Dark Tower.

And in a new interview with Playboy, Mr. Alright explained why he chose Dark Tower over Guardians of the Galaxy:

“I like Guardians of the Galaxy, but what I saw was ‘It’s successful, and now we’ve got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor.’ I’d feel like an amendment. The Dark Tower script was well written, I like the director [Nikolaj Arcel] and his take on it, and I can be the creator, the author of the Man in Black—a.k.a. the Devil—in my version of this Stephen King novel. It’s a fantastic thriller that takes place in another realm, an alternate universe, but it’s very much grounded. For instance, the gunslinger’s weapon isn’t a lightsaber or something; it’s a pistol.”

Makes sense to us. He wanted to take a chance and do something a little different. He wanted his own character that he could play around with.

You have to respect that. He didn’t go for the easy role. He’s grown a lot since his Failure to Launch days.

Stephen King Has Made It Official: Matthew McConaughey And Idris Elba Will Star In ‘The Dark Tower’

kin

We knew there was at least a 90% chance of this happening, but now we can increase things to 100%, thanks to a series of tweets from Stephen King. The film version of The Dark Tower is finally moving forward, and it’s going to have two huge names leading the way.

Idris Elba has been confirmed to play the gunslinger Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey will show off his acting range by playing villain Randall Flagg. Obviously, this is great casting news because both Elba and McConaughey are incredible actors, but honestly it’s just nice to know that production is finally getting started.

Stephen King and the film’s director Nikolaj Arcel spoke to Entertainment Weekly earlier this week to provide some more details on the exciting news.

“The thing is, it’s been a looong trip from the books to the film. When you think about it, I started these stories as a senior in college, sitting in a little sh-tty cabin beside the river in Maine, and finally this thing is actually in pre-production now. I’m delighted, and I’m a little bit surprised.”

I think we’re all a little bit surprised and delighted. During the interview, Arcel and King gave everyone a few details about how the first film might play out.

According to the author, the first film will begin in the middle of the events instead of at the beginning…

“[The movie] starts in media res, in the middle of the story instead of at the beginning, which may upset some of the fans a little bit, but they’ll get behind it, because it is the story.”

The first film in the series is expected to hit theaters January 13, 2017.
