‘Tenet’ Will Open Internationally Before Making Its Debut In The States

The drama surrounding Christopher Nolan’s Tenet‘ film continues this week. It was announced last week that the release date was being pushed back once again, thanks to the coronavirus.

At the time, they did not reveal a new release date, but now we are hearing that it’ll open in select cities in North America over Labor Day weekend on September 3.

But if you live overseas, there is a chance you’ll be able to check it out a week or two before.

It’s scheduled to be released internationally on August 26.

The movie is launching at the end of August in 70 international territories, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia and the United Kingdom. The studio does not have plans yet to release Tenet in China.

It’s a bold move. North America is the world’s biggest film market, so most every film premieres in the states before releasing internationally, but these are obviously wild times.

Warner Bros. recently began telling exhibitors in Europe and Asia about plans for an Aug. 26-28 opening weekend. Strong ticket sales for ‘Train to Busan’ sequel ‘Peninsula,’ which has generated $21 million in Korea since July 15, was a sign of confidence to studios that patrons were ready to get out of the house and attend the movies.

So finally, after months of rescheduling, it’s looking like Tenet will hit theaters in late August.

As for the Labor Day premiere in the states? We’ll see what happens.
