‘Straight Outta Compton’ Hit With Ridiculous Defamation Lawsuit By N.W.A Manager Jerry Heller

Jerry Heller, the former manager of N.W.A, is raising some hell because he believes the box office smash Straight Outta Compton falsely portrayed him as responsible for the break-up of the successful group. He also claims he never took advantage of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube or Eazy E.

He’s seeking at least $110 million in damages. Of course, the lawsuit is taking on the most powerful people involved in the making of this film. There are several defendants listed, including Legendary Pictures, director F. Gary Gray, Universal Studios, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube.

Heller claims the film failed to get his consent, refused to give him any of the profits, and completely ruined his reputation in the business.

You can read a portion of the lawsuit below…

“The insidiousness of Defendants’ behavior is underscored by the fact that the Film may well become the largest globally grossing music-story based film ever. The larger the success of the film, the greater the damages to [Heller], who has been and continues to be defamed, ridiculed, and robbed of his personal and financial rights to the extent that the intentional and egregious behavior of Defendants demands the imposing of punitive damages.”

The fact that Heller is suing and asking for over $100 million almost proves his character in the movie was accurate, considering he was portrayed as a sleazy businessman who was never afraid to threaten someone with legal action.

We’ll see what happens. So far, lawyers for Dr. Dre and Ice Cube have refused to comment on the lawsuit.

‘Straight Outta Compton’ Goes Straight Into The Number One Spot At The Box Office

Before the film’s release, there were several articles questioning if Straight Outta Compton could cross into the mainstream and become a huge success. Of course, those articles were ridiculous because the movie didn’t need to cross anything to become mainstream.

How would a film about one of the most popular groups in the most important cultural movement of the last 30-40 years not be mainstream? Oh wait, I know! It’s because there wasn’t a straight white male lead to market the movie, right? Because we all know no one wants to see a movie if Zac Efron isn’t taking off his shirt in it.

I mean, yeah, their debut studio album Straight Outta Compton shocked the world when it reached double platinum sales status, but would anyone actually go see a movie about the group? The answer is yes.

N.W.A shocked the world again. Straight Outta Compton crushed the competition last weekend with an impressive $56.1 million total. It passed American Pie 2 to become the biggest-ever August debut for an R-rated film. It has already doubled its production budget in just three days.

“The movie tapped into something in our culture and that made it more of a must-see.” Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com told Variety.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I’d suggest you go watch it. It’s a wonderful movie.

Complete with an intro from Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, the first red band trailer for the film based on the rise of N.W.A., has been released online. The trailer was teased during the Grammys Sunday night, which was a brilliant piece of marketing by Universal Pictures, the company responsible for distributing the movie.

Straight Outta Compton is said to follow “the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A.” and will tell “the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.”

The film stars, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren, and Paul Giamatti will be starring as N.W.A. manager Jerry Heller. It took a long time (and a lot of hard work) to get this film made, so we are hoping it delivers. The trailer definitely has us excited, but we have been fooled by slick trailers before.

Check it out down below, and be sure to watch the film once it hits theaters on August 14th, 2015.
