Universal Pictures and Working Title Films are teaming up with filmmaker Coralie Fargeat for the upcoming body horror movie, The Substance.
The film, which will be Coralie’s first studio feature, will star Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. The French filmmaker made her directing debut with the indie action-thriller Revenge back in 2017. The film received lots of praise from critics.
Specifics on The Substance are being kept under wraps, but Deadline hears it is Fargeat’s explosive feminist take on body horror. Production begins in Paris this May.
Landing Moore and Qualley is a pretty a big deal. Obviously Moore has been a big name in Hollywood for decades, and Qualley is one of the hottest young actresses at the moment, so Coralie will have a lot to work with.
Qualley is nominated for SAG and Critics Choice awards for her performance in the limited Netflix series Maid. She next stars in the Claire Denis-directed drama Stars at Noon, which recently wrapped in Panama, and opposite Christopher Abbott in Zachary Wigon’s indie Sanctuary.
As mentioned above, filming on this project begins in May, which means we are likely looking at a release date in 2023. We’ll keep you posted.
