The world has many things to worry about, including climate change, racism, evil dictators, income inequality, and the list goes on and on.
But for some people, cancel culture is the thing they’re worried about most. Johnny Depp attended a press conference preceding his Donostia Awards reception at the San Sebastian Film Festival, and during the press conference, one reporter praised the actor for his thoughts on cancel culture.
This sparked a bit of a rant from Depp…
It can be seen as an event in history that lasted for however long it lasted, this cancel culture, this instant rush to judgement based on what essentially amounts to polluted air. It’s so far out of hand now that I can promise you that no one is safe. Not one of you. No one out that door. No one is safe. It takes one sentence and there’s no more ground, the carpet has been pulled. It’s not just me that this has happened to, it’s happened to a lot of people. This type of thing has happened to women, men.
This dude is talking about cancel culture as if it’s COVID-19. “It’s happening to women, men…DOG…YEAH DOGS ARE GETTING CANCELLED! GOOGLE IT!”
I don’t mean to make fun. He does have a point. We do rush to judge, especially online. We refuse to wait until all the facts come out because if we wait, then no one will care about your super hilarious tweet anymore. It’ll be old news. The internet begs us to make quick judgements.
It’s something that needs to be changed, but at the same time, I think Depp should pull back on this a bit.
His relationship with Amber Heard was not as one-sided as he wants everyone to believe. Yes, she hit him, but he was also an angry drunk who hit her as well. Whether it was in self defense or not, who knows, but the two of them were toxic as hell. No one can come out of that relationship looking good.
