Five Outstanding Movies You May Have Missed In 2019

Well, 2020 was set to be jam-packed with new releases, but thanks to the coronavirus, everything has been put on hold.

And we understand you might be struggling right now. Desperately searching for something new to watch.

Well, we have you covered. You might think you’ve watched every great film released in 2019, but we’re willing to bet you missed at least one or two of the movies listed below.

5. FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY

This might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re into the wrestling scene, then this movie was made for you. The sports comedy-drama, which was written by Stephen Merchant, stars the extremely talented Florence Pugh.

The film follows the life of English professional wrestler Saraya “Paige” Knight as she makes her way up in the WWE. The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year and received rave reviews from critics. You can stream Fighting with My Family on Hulu if you have a subscription.

4. THE NIGHTINGALE

Let this be a warning to you all: this film is hard to watch. If you’re feeling down, it’s not going to cheer you up. That being said, the performances in this film are incredibly moving. The Australian period drama stars Aisling Franciosi, Sam Claflin, and Baykali Ganambarr.

“The film follows a young woman convict seeking revenge for a terrible act of violence committed against her family.”

It’s brutal to watch, but it’s also strangely empowering, and the friendship between Aisling and Baykali’s characters is a joy to watch. It’s also available to stream on Hulu.

3. THE MUSTANG

Laura de Clermont-Tonnerre makes her feature directorial debut in this movie, and damn is it one marvelous debut. The indie drama stars Matthias Schoenaerts as an incarcerated convict who participates in a rehabilitation program centered around the training of wild horses.

It’s a beautiful film about both redemption and rehabilitation. Bruce Dern co-stars in the movie and gives a lovely performance as well.

By the way, the story is based on an actual rehabilitation program in Carson City, Nevada. It’s available to stream on Hulu.

2. FAST COLOR

Unlike many of the films on this list, Fast Color is a movie you can watch with the whole family. It’s a grounded superhero film from the brilliant mind of writer-director Julia Hart.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars in film as Ruth, a woman with supernatural powers on the run from scientists and law enforcement who hope to capture her and study her. This is not your typical superhero film, which is why it’s so special.

Fast Color sits at a comfortable 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is available to stream on Hulu.

`1. CRAWL

We tried to make this list balanced. You have a comedy, a superhero flick, some indie dramas, and now to finish it off…a disaster-horror flick. Admittedly, the trailer for ‘Crawl’ comes across as comical. I actually laughed when I saw the trailer in theaters, but the movie is actually extremely entertaining.

It sits at an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and for good reason. It’s impossible to be bored while watching this flick. It also clocks in at just under 90 minutes, which is a refreshing change.

The premise is pretty insane:

“It stars Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper as a daughter and father, who along with their dog are hunted by alligators after becoming trapped in their home during a Category 5 hurricane.”

Sounds like fun, right? It is. You can check out viewing options on Amazon Prime.
