‘Avengers: Endgame’ Has Just Enough To Beat ‘Detective Pikachu’ At The Box Office

As we predicted, ‘Detective Pikachu‘ didn’t have enough in the tank to take down ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ at the box office, which means Endgame had its third straight weekend at the top.

The marvel/disney flick made $63.1 million this past weekend, bringing its domestic total up to a ridiculous $723.5 million. It has now topped Infinity War and Black Panther. It added another $100 million internationally, which brings its global total up to $2.5 billion. It’s getting so very close to Avatar’s $2.8 billion total.

Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds’ Detective Pikachu opened this past weekend and made a respectable $58 million. Experts were predicting between $50 and $60 million, so it was a decent performance. I don’t think anyone is mad about being just $5 million behind the biggest movie ever.

Internationally, Pikachu did beat Endgame. It took home $103 million, just $3 million more than Endgame.

The only downside for Endgame is that domestic sales fell by 57 percent. That’s a little higher of a drop than the 46 percent drop Infinity War experienced during its third week. But I mean, who really cares at this point?

John Wick: Chapter 3 hits theaters next weekend. It should (SHOULD) beat Endgame.

Will Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Detective Pikachu’ Take The Top Spot Away From ‘Avengers: Endgame’ This Weekend?

Avengers: Endgame‘ has dominated the box office the past two weekends. It’s already made an incredible $640 million at the domestic box office and a record-breaking $2.2 billion around the world.

But will it top the box office here in the states for the third weekend in a row? Or will Ryan Reynolds’Detective Pikachu‘ film steal the number one spot away?

Well, it’s going to be close. According to the experts, Detective Pikachu could make as little as $50 million and as much as $80 million. Meanwhile, Avengers: Endgame is expected to bring in around $70 million.

It would be a pretty great surprise if Detective Pikachu beat Avengers, but honestly…I don’t see it happening. I have a hard time believing Pikachu will have a $80 million opening. I think $50 to $60 million is more likely, and I don’t think that’s going to be enough to beat Avengers.

IT WILL BE CLOSE THOUGH! The Pokemon live action/animated flick has been receiving mixed (to slightly positive) reviews from critics. Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, and Suki Waterhouse star.

Watch The New Trailer For ‘Detective Pikachu’ Starring Ryan Reynolds

Get out your magnifying glass and long jacket, ’cause there are some mysteries that need solving. Ryan Reynolds stars in the upcoming live action/animated hybrid ‘Detective Pikachu‘ film.

Rob Letterman is the director behind this project, which has already been approved for a sequel.

Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City — a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world — Pikachu and [a young man (Smith) investigating the disappearance of his father] encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

As mentioned above, Warner Bros. has already announced a sequel to this film, which means they have lots of faith in it. They’re expecting a huge box office performance.

Detective Pikachu is set to hit theaters May 10, 2019. Check out the trailer below…

Ryan Reynolds Will Star In Live-Action Pokemon Film ‘Detective Pikachu”

It sounds like a joke, but this is actually happening. Ryan Reynolds, the badass star of Deadpool, will reportedly star in Legendary’s live-action Pokemon movie, Detective Pikachu. He will join Justice Smith, and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton.

Rob Letterman, the director behind 2015’s Goosebumps, will direct this film. It’s scheduled to begin filming in January in London. We will let The Hollywood Reporter explain a little more about this movie…

“Pikachu is a species of Pokemon, while Detective Pikachu the character is a peculiar sort from the Pikachu set, a self-styled investigator who is good at finding things. Reynolds will portray the titular detective. The story is kicked into gear when Smith’s character’s father is kidnapped, forcing the teen to team up with Pikachu in order to find him. Newton will play a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.”

It’s clear the studio is hoping this film receives great numbers at the box office. The Pokemon franchise is huge, they have sold over 300 million video games worldwide, so there is obviously a big market. I think this film might be more successful outside the United States.

The addition of Reynolds will certainly help sell it to the U.S. audience, though. I mean, just knowing Reynolds signed on makes me believe this movie might actually be worth a watch. I don’t think he’d do it otherwise.
