This summer is going to be filled with sequels and remakes. It feels like we say that every year, but this year it’s especially true.
You have Pirates of the Caribbean 5, The Nut Job 2, Despicable Me 3, Cars 3, Transformers 5, Alien: Covenant, War for the Planet of the Apes, and the list goes on and on.
And typically, sequels, remakes, and franchises bring in a lot of money. But looking at the list above, the titles aren’t that impressive. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is not as strong, and the Transformers franchise is on its way out.
This summer is going to be filled with films that just do “okay,” and that’s not good enough. One of the biggest movies of the summer (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) has already been released, and the important people in Hollywood fear it will only go down from here.
“One studio number cruncher puts the decline as high as 10 percent. Two others agree that, absent surprises, 2017 won’t match 2016. If their pessimism is correct, this summer is shaping up to be the worst since 2014.”
But some experts predict this summer could be even worse than that. If there are no surprise hits, experts claim this summer’s box office could be the worst we’ve seen in a decade.
We’ll see what happens. If the experts are correct, you can expect to see studios making some major changes in the coming years.
