Last month, we told you that Denzel Washington really threw himself into his latest role. The 62-year-old actor plays a “no-nonsense” criminal defense attorney in Roman J. Israel, Esq. As we told you in the previous post, the director of the project (Dan Gilroy) gave Denzel the freedom to create the look of the character.
Denzel showed up to set with a few added pounds and a noticeable gap between his teeth. A gap he corrected back in high school, “He came in one day and smiled and said, ‘I went to the dentist.’ They drilled out the gap he was born with,” Gilroy said.
The first trailer for the film was released this week, and it works to set up the premise “of Washington’s character operating in the overburdened Los Angeles criminal court system as a disillusioned defense attorney.”
The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to mixed reviews, but Sony is still hoping Washington can land an Oscar nomination for his role. They are releasing this film right in the middle of awards season on November 3, 2017.
No one works harder in Hollywood than Denzel Washington. I truly believe that. He cares about every project he touches, and he cared deeply about his latest film, ‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.‘
The movie was written and directed by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) and in the film, Denzel plays a likely autistic legal savant who grew up as a political activist “and finds himself at a personal and professional crossroads following the death of his longtime partner.”
Gilroy gave Denzel the freedom to create the look of the character, and the 62-year-old actor did not disappoint. He came back with a few extra pounds on him, longer hair, and a gap between his teeth. The same gap he was born with but had filled in when he was in high school.
“He came in one day and smiled and said, ‘I went to the dentist.’ They drilled out the gap he was born with,” Gilroy explained. That’s how much Denzel cares.
The film received a standing ovation at its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 10, 2017. Sadly, the movie has received mixed reviews (at best) from critics, so it probably won’t be taking home any Oscars.
But still, you gotta respect Denzel’s dedication. If you need a little motivation this Friday, watch the video below…
The new trailer for Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler has fans crawling out of their seats in anticipation. The twisted thriller stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a freelance crime journalist in California. He’s desperate and willing to do anything to get a decent story.
However, his bosses want more from him. They want more shocking footage, and it isn’t long before the crime reporter becomes the crime facilitator. Jake Gyllenhaal passed up on a fat paycheck with Into The Woods to star in this film, and he had to lose 20 pounds, but it looks like all the hard work will pay off. This new trailer already has people talking about a possible 2015 Oscar nomination for Jake.
The film also stars Rene Russo and Bill Paxton. It’s scheduled to be released October 31.
