Zooey Deschanel, Walton Goggins and Casey Affleck Set To Star In Upcoming Music Drama ‘Dreamin’ Wild’

Filmmaker Bill Pohlad is putting together a pretty great cast for his upcoming music drama, Dreamin’ Wild, about musicians Donnie and Joe Emerson.

Pohlad wrote the script for this film and will direct it as well. According to a new report from Variety, Zooey Deschanel, Casey Affleck and Walton Goggins will all have leading roles. They’ll be joined by Noah Jupe, Jack Dylan Grazer, Beau Bridges and Chris Messina.

Dreamin’ Wild tells the true story of the Emerson family and the tumult that followed the success of their self-recorded album, which went largely unnoticed until critics rediscovered it and fell in love decades later. Now, as an adult, Donnie is forced to confront the ghosts from the past and grapple with the emotional toll his dreams have taken on the family who supported him.

Affleck plays present day Donnie in the flick while Noah Jupe will portray him in his teenage years. Zooey will be playing Donnie’s wife, Nancy, and Goggins will play Joe Emmerson.

Filming has started in Washington. No word on when production is expected to end, but we’re assuming they’ll be going for another couple weeks.

Expect to see this released late 2022. We’ll keep you posted.

Watch The First Trailer For ‘Our Friend’ Starring Jason Segel And Dakota Johnson

It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Jason Segel starring in a film. He’s been focused in the TV world recently with his series ‘Dispatches from Elsewhere’

But that will change come January 22, 2021. He’s set to star in the upcoming film ‘Our Friend‘ alongside Dakota Johnson and Casey Affleck. The movie was actually filmed back in 2019.

The film, written by Brad Ingelsby, follows the journey of Segel’s Dane Faucheux, who moves in with Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson’s Matt and Nicole Teague and their kids when Nicole is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Our Friend is based on Matt Teague’s 2015 Esquire essay ‘The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word,’ which recounts the real-life experience of Faucheux putting his personal life and career on hold to offer support to his best friend’s family during the last year of Nicole’s life.

The trailer was just released, a month or two before the scheduled release date. Some people believe it has a shot at winning some awards.

It certainly looks emotional. Check out the trailer below…

Casey Affleck Withdraws From The 2018 Oscars, Will Not Present Best Actress Award

We figured this news would be coming. According to a new report from Deadline, Casey Affleck has withdrawn from presenting the Best Actress Award at the 2018 Oscars. It’s tradition for the Best Actor winner from the previous year to present the Best Actress award the following year. Affleck won Best Actor at the 2017 Oscars for his performance in Manchester by the Sea.

Many people expressed how disappointed they’d be if Affleck got on stage to hand out the award. As most of you know, two women accused Affleck of sexual misconduct and just general inappropriate behavior while filming the 2010 film I’m Still Here. A settlement was reached and non-disclosure agreements were signed, so Affleck escaped the mess for several years.

But now that the #MeToo movement is here, those allegations against him are coming back to bite him in the ass. And instead of placing himself directly inside the fire, Affleck made the smart decision to remove himself from the upcoming Oscars.

Deadline reports:

“He has notified the Academy he will not be attending the event, sources said. I’ve heard that Affleck did not want to become a distraction from the focus that should be on the performances of the actresses in the category and that is why he made the proactive move. He was in a no-win situation, with all the attention surrounding the #MeToo movement. The specter of Affleck presenting would have created controversy.”

He definitely made the right decision.

An Online Petition Has Been Launched In Hopes Of Banning Casey Affleck From The Oscars

As some of you may remember, Casey Affleck won the Academy Award for Best Actor earlier this year for his performance in Manchester by the Sea. It was a wonderful movie, and honestly, he probably did give the best performance out of all the nominees.

Best Actor winners are invited back to the ceremony the following year to announce the winner of their opposite-gender successor, which means Affleck is scheduled to give out the award for Best Actress next year at the Oscars.

This is a problem for some people because Affleck has been accused of sexual harassment in the past. Back in 2010, sexual harassment allegations were made against the actor by a producer and a cinematographer on the set of the documentary I’m Still Here. One of the women claimed Affleck snuck into her bed while she was sleeping and started caressing her back.

The other woman said Affleck encouraged a male crew member to show her his penis, and then asked her to stay in his hotel room. He allegedly grabbed her when she refused. Of course, he denies these allegations and both cases were settled out of court.

The Change.org petition is calling on the Academy to ban Affleck from the event…

“According to tradition, [Affleck] will present the Best Actress award this year. With these credible accusations against him, the Academy should take action and rescind the privilege this year.”

After getting over 18,000 signatures, the petition grabbed the attention of Academy Awards CEO Dawn Hudson, who revealed they were giving thought to the suggestion.

And while there was no petition in place to ban him last year, Brie Larson was clearly uncomfortable with presenting the award to him…

“Affleck’s continued awards successes last year proved controversial, with actress Brie Larson, who won an Oscar the previous year for her role as a sexual abuse survivor in Room, forced to present Affleck with numerous Best Actor awards over the course of the 2017 awards season. She refused to clap for or engage with Affleck during televised ceremonies, and told Vanity Fair that “I think that whatever it was that I did on stage kind of spoke for itself. I’ve said all that I need to say about that topic.”

Last Week Tonight Host John Oliver Slams The Academy For Not Doing Enough After It Expelled Harvey Weinstein (VIDEO)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPqko6Q0lpE

If you haven’t heard, the Academy had an emergency meeting over the weekend on the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal. It didn’t take long for the members to vote for Weinstein’s expulsion. It’s only the second time in the organization’s history that such a punishment has been handed out to one of its members.

And while many people were pleased with the decision, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver pointed out how hypocritical the Academy is, and slammed them for not doing enough.

“Yes, finally! The group that counts among its current members Roman Polanski, Bill Cosby, and Mel Gibson has found the one guy who treated women badly and kicked him out. So, congratulations, Hollywood! See you at the next Oscars where – and this is true – Casey Affleck will be presenting Best Actress.”

For those who don’t know, Casey Affleck was hit with a couple of sexual harassment lawsuits in 2010. He has denied any wrongdoing, but the same can be said for most abusers. They’re not going to admit it.

Oliver’s point is fair. Why did the Academy take such drastic measures with Weinstein? Because they were under intense pressure from the public. They should have this attitude toward all of the abusers in Hollywood. These decisions shouldn’t be made simply because the dirty business is out in the open.

The Trailer For ‘A Ghost Story’ Has Been Released, Critics Are LOVING This Film!

We shared the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer with you all earlier today, and we were hard on it for giving away too much.

Unfortunately, the latest trailer for ‘A Ghost Story‘ is also heavy with the spoilers, but it doesn’t matter as much because this movie doesn’t depend on a conventional story that follows all your typical Hollywood beats. This film is doing its own thing, and that’s why critics are loving it.

A Ghost Story premiered earlier this year at Sundance, and most critics came out of the festival saying it was the best film of Sundance 2017.

Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara co-star in the indie drama. It was written and directed by David Lowery, the man behind Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Pete’s Dragon.

We’re going to keep the description of this film short for you. You need to go in knowing as little as possible. It’s scheduled to hit theaters July 7, 2017.

“A ghost (Casey Affleck) silently observes his grieving widow (Rooney Mara) in his beloved home.”

Movie Review: The Finest Hours – You Stomach Will Hurt With Tension Even Though You know The Ending

What’s with all these ‘disaster at sea’ movies coming out lately? Is there some kind of nautical trend that I’m not aware of? I have to admit, I’m not a big ‘sea adventure’ fan unless the movie involves pirates. But despite a significant lack of pirates, The Finest Hours did ok in my book.

The Finest Hours stars Chris Pine as Bernie Webber, one of the members of the Coast Guard who attempts a rescue of a tanker in the middle of a nor’easter. The story is based on a true story that occurred off the coast of Cape Cod in the 1950s.

It’s actually a pretty well researched subject, with everything that happened a matter of public record. It’s about a true-life US Coast Guard rescue mission off Cape Cod in the winter of 1952, when an oil tanker sheared in two and a small crew from the Chatham station went searching for survivors in a tempest that came close to claiming their lives.

Director Craig Gillespie and his screenwriters, Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy, and Eric Johnson did an excellent job of capturing the time period and the atmosphere. It’s a stiffer, dreary, almost clinical approach to the events, which isn’t terrible in and of itself. They also gave the characters some realistic backstories, making the focus of this movie the rescue and not the rescuers.

The plotline is kind of confusing but the makers did make an effort to simplify it for audiences. The characters were pretty well developed with Kasey Affleck being the most compelling in my book. It’s a thrilling movie with some excellent, terrifying CGI. It’s a movie that will make your stomach hurt with tension, even though you know how it ends.

I like the way the screenwriters respected the facts and didn’t try to go off subject on us. It appears that there’s less embellishment and more simple artistic license making this movie better.

As far as the actors go, while the roles were a bit clichéd, they kind of help keep things straight. This movie again, isn’t about the characters. The hero is played by Chris Pine, as one of those enthusiastic new recruits types with a super sweet fiancé, Miriam (Holly Grainger). Their chemistry was good and Pine played his part true to form. But to me, it’s Casey Affleck that really steals the show. He plays one of the most compelling characters, the near-mute outcast of the crew and he does it with such depth, you forget that a dude that good looking would never be an outcast. Seriously, Casey Affleck made me forget he was hot.

While it’s not my genre, I can absolutely respect the movie for what it was. While sometimes a bit convoluted in the details, it’s still a good retelling of some real life events. It’s compelling and suspenseful, though it does drag in a few places. They put together a movie with great special effects, and for that alone should not be missed. This is one that’s worth the watch, even if you prefer your sea movies with pirates.

Although pirates would have made it better, just saying.

Netflix And Amazon Are The Top Buyers At Sundance Film Festival, Find Out Which Film Sold For $10 Million

mancc

While most traditional distributors haven’t picked up anything coming out of the 11-day Sundance Film Festival, Netflix and Amazon have been extremely busy. Amazon is leading the way with four films and Netflix is not far behind with three.

And it looks like Amazon might have scored one of the most popular films at the festival. The Casey Affleck-led drama Manchester By the Sea sparked a passionate bidding war after its successful premiere at the festival this past weekend.

According to Deadline, the auction went on all night, and Amazon finally came out on top with a $10 million deal. Why was the streaming service willing to pay so much? Because the film has the potential to win some awards, which is why there are “plans for a traditional theatrical release with an awards season campaign.”

Matt Damon is a producer on the film, and he told USA Today that he cried every single time he read the script.

“Basically, it’s one of the best roles I’ve ever seen. Casey instantly took the role. Because he saw what we all saw. I never made it through this script without crying. … I wish I was in it, but I’m happy to be attached to it.”

Meanwhile, Netflix dropped a cool $7 million for the global streaming rights to “The Fundamentals of Caring,” which stars Paul Rudd, Selena Gomez and Craig Roberts. It’s based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Jonathan Evison.

Gomez promoted the movie heavily on her Instagram while filming was taking place early last year.
