Bohemian Rhapsody didn’t get amazing reviews from critics, but audiences around the world seem to really enjoy it. The music biopic featuring the life of Freddie Mercury and Queen, has been having a good ol’ time at the global box office.
According to the reports, it has made over $600 million at the box office, which means it’s now the highest-grossing music biopic of all time domestically, internationally and worldwide.
“Nominated for two Golden Globes and two SAG Awards this week, the story of Freddie Mercury and legendary band Queen has now topped previous music biopic domestic record holder Straight Outta Compton. It’s also outperformed Fox’s own The Greatest Showman, a breakout that had extra-long legs from last year’s holiday corridor.”
20th Century Fox has to be feeling pretty good right about now. According to insiders, the studio knew all along the film would perform well overseas, and they were correct. It’s made $433 million globally. Its domestic haul sits at $175.5 million.
It looks like Hollywood is biopic crazy right now. According to multiple reports, Gail Berman’s Jackal Group is currently developing a biographical project about the legendary George Carlin.
Stan Chervin, the writer behind Moneyball, is currently writing the script. Obviously, we’re still in the very early stages at the moment, so there are not a lot of details to work with.
But we know Chervin will have plenty of material to grab inspiration from. Carlin’s stand-up comedy career was over five decades long. He had 14 HBO specials, 23 albums, five Grammy awards for those albums, and over 120 Tonight Show appearances. If anyone deserves a movie made about their life, it’s Carlin.
The team working on this project sent out the following statement…
“We are honored to tell the story of one of the most important and influential comedians of all time, and to do so alongside those who knew him best. In addition to shaping comedy and culture for decades and entertaining generations of audiences, Carlin’s battle to protect free speech continues to impact our daily lives and is as relevant as ever.”
We all know Shia LaBeouf is obsessed with himself. He had that whole livestream event where we all watched him as he watched every movie he’s ever been in, which has to be the most narcissistic thing ever.
But at the same time, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it. He’s a talented dude who is always on the edge of a breakdown, which makes him exciting to follow.
The 31-year-old actor is currently filming a biopic about his life titled Honey Boy. Shia will not be playing himself in the movie. Instead, he’ll be playing his father, and as you can see, he looks almost unrecognizable.
Here’s a first look at Shia LaBeouf as Shia LaBeouf’s father in the Shia LaBeouf biopic Honey Boy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ pic.twitter.com/mWa2bSwopU
Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges will be playing Shia in the film, which was co-written by Shia. The story will follow the former Disney star attempting to repair his relationship with his alcohol-abusing father.
This will be Shia’s first film since his July 2017 arrest in Georgia for disorderly conduct, obstruction and public drunkenness. He has since apologized for his behavior during the arrest, calling it a mixture of “white privilege and desperation and disaster.”
No word on when this movie is expected to be released, but we will obviously keep you posted. This could either be a masterpiece or a disaster.
Renee Zellweger is trying to make her big Hollywood comeback in the upcoming biopic Judy, which is sadly not based on the life of Judge Judy.
This biopic will focus on the life of Judy Garland, specifically Garland’s life in the late 1960s when she was performing a series of concerts in London not long before her shocking death in 1969.
Zellweger stars as the Wizard of Oz actress in the film, which is currently in production in London. It will focus on the drama that was going on behind-the-scenes in Garland’s life. As most of you know, her cause of death was an accidental barbiturate overdose.
This will be Zellweger’s biggest film in years. She took a six-year break from acting and just recently came back in 2016 for Bridget Jones’s Baby.
“I found anonymity, so I could have exchanges with people on a human level and be seen and heard, not be defined by this image that precedes me when I walk into a room. You cannot be a good storyteller if you don’t have life experiences, and you can’t relate to people.”
Judy is currently scheduled to be released later this year.
Ethan Hawke is one of my favorite actors, and since I care about him, you should as well. The 47-year-old actor is in the prime of his career, and his next project will be a big one.
According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Hawke is set to play electricity pioneer Nikola Tesla. The film, which is simply titled Tesla, is currently in development and it’s being introduced to buyers by Millennium Media at the European Film Market.
“The biopic, being produced by Passage Pictures and Campbell Grobman Films, will chronicle the life and times of the famed Serbia-born inventor, including his creation of the AC motor and his fierce rivalry with Thomas Edison.”
Not much else is known about the project at this time, but we will keep you posted. Hopefully this film has award potential. I know awards don’t mean much, but it would be nice to see Hawke land an Oscar. He’s been nominated for four Oscars for his work in Boyhood, Before Midnight, Before Sunset and Training Day.
The lucky people who attended Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party this year got a great surprise. During the event, Davis invited Jennifer Hudson to sing a few songs. She, of course, nailed the performance.
After she finished up her final song of the evening, Davis told the crowd that Hudson will be playing Aretha Franklin in the upcoming biopic about the life of the Queen of Soul. And it should not surprise you to learn that Hudson was hand picked by Franklin herself.
Davis called Hudson a “transcendent performer” and basically called her the next Aretha.
“I told her, ‘No, no one ever expected you to sing, Halle. I never thought of you as a singer.’ A lot of movies come out where it’s the original artist and their songs are lip-sung to. That is how it would turn out if it’s Halle. If not—if, for instance, it’s Jennifer Hudson—she might sing one or two, but the rest would still be my original records.”
I think Hudson over Berry was the correct decision. Berry is a great actress, but Hudson is a great actress AND a lovely singer. She is perfect for the role, and we can’t wait to watch her knock it out of the park.
As most of you know by now, Hugh Hefner died last week at the age of 91. He lived a long and happy life, and now his life will be on display for the world to see in an upcoming biopic directed by Brett Ratner.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jared Leto will star as the Playboy founder in the film. Ratner told the media that he truly believes Leto is the only actor for the job.
“Jared is an old friend. When he heard I got the rights to Hef’s story, he told me, ‘I want to play him. I want to understand him.’ And I really believe Jared can do it. He’s one of the great actors of today.”
The project is currently in the early stages of development with Ratner’s RatPac Entertainment. Ratner has been wanting to direct this biopic since 2007. It was originally attached to Universal Pictures, but when the rights expired, they were purchased by producer Jerry Weintraub.
Jerry died in 2015, and that’s when Ratner got the rights for his own company. Back in April. Ratner invited Leto to the Playboy Mansion for a premiere party in hopes of introducing him to Hefner, but Hef was not feeling well that day and did not meet with guests.
Ratner is not worried about it, though.
“There’s enough footage on Hef out there that Jared will be able to get as much information as he wants.”
Well, this escalated quickly. It started off with a shaky source, talking about how Jamie Foxx was takingpunches inside a gym, and now it has transformed into a sure thing.
Mike Tyson recently confirmed that Jamie Foxx will play him in an upcoming biopic, which might be directed by Martin Scorsese. No release date has been announced. Heck, we don’t even know when filming might begin, but we do know this movie is going to be certified fresh.
Back in May of 2015, when Foxx was first linked to the Mike Tyson biopic rumors, Foxx brilliantly described the opening scene of the movie. We don’t know if this is still the plan, but if there is a God in heaven…
Will Jamie Foxx finally get his wish to play Mike Tyson in a biopic? Well, maybe. If you’ve been following Foxx for the past few years, you’ve probably heard him mention this project multiple times. He’s been wanting to land this role for a long time.
And now it looks like everything might be coming together. A source claims Foxx has been in the gym training for the movie, and it hasn’t been going so well…
“Jamie went to a couple of sessions with his trainer in the gym for this movie. He looked quite good throwing a few jabs and crosses against the pads. But when he tried a bit of sparring, he didn’t fare so well. He took a couple of hooks and walked out. He knows if he wants to play Iron Mike then he needs to improve that side of his game.”
This project would reportedly be directed by Martin Scorsese, but we must warn you that in our professional opinion, this source sounds like he/she is full of sh*t.
I mean, they included this line in their report…
“Mike knows it is Jamie’s dream to play him and they have talked about gym work and how he could put him through his paces. The only thing is that if they go sparring and Mike connects, Jamie may never make any movie again.”
That doesn’t sound real at all. It sounds like someone was bored and hit up some tip line to spread lies. We’re not saying Foxx doesn’t want to play Tyson in a movie, ’cause it’s clear he does.
But is he actively training for it right now? Probably not. Doesn’t even sound like there’s a script.
Right now, Rami Malek is known for his wonderful work on Mr. Robot, but next year, he will only be known as Freddie Mercury. On September 5 (what would have been Mercury’s 71st birthday) the first-look at Malek in the 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody was released.
And as you can see, Malek has nailed the physical transformation. He looks just like Freddie in the photo.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Malek admitted even he was moved by the transformation when he first saw himself in the mirror after hair and makeup…
“When you’re able to open your eyes and see a different person staring back at you in the mirror, it’s a very affirming moment.”
Bryan Singer is the director behind this project, and he claims his approach to Bohemian Rhapsody was a bit different. It’s “not a traditional biopic,” but rather a story honoring the music created by a legendary rock group.
“It won’t just be the dark Freddie story, but that being said, that also will be honored. It’s about collaboration. It’s a celebration.”
It’s scheduled to be released on Christmas Day 2018, and it’s probably going to be incredible.
