The good news? Step Brothers 2 will happen. The bad news? It’s not going to happen any time soon. Director Adam McKay sat down for an interview with Collider recently and he was asked if fans should expect a sequel to Step Brothers.
His answer was both surprising and a little disappointing. He admitted that they already have an outline for the sequel, but made it clear that he’s only focusing on original movies at the moment. Which is actually probably a smart move, especially when you consider the fact that a lot of fans were disappointed with Anchorman 2.

“We have a whole story, an outline, that we’re happy with. We were ready to go, and you know the story of [how] we got the call on Anchorman 2. We’re not gonna do it now ‘cause we just did a sequel, I don’t wanna get into the sequel business too much. It was kind of a novelty to do one of them and it was certainly very interesting and I had never done anything like it. So I want to go make some original movies—or you know, The Big Short is an adaptation but do some different stuff. But who knows? Two to three years, three to four years. I mean the funny thing with ‘Step Brothers’ is if those guys are in their 50’s it still works, so we could easily return to that, but for now no sequels.”
Sounds like a good plan. He makes a great point at the end. The older Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly get, the funnier the story becomes. I wouldn’t mind seeing Will and John living with their parents inside a nursing home. Can you imagine? Stealing pudding from old people, flirting with the nurses, flinging feces all over the walls. I’d certainly watch it.
