‘Aladdin’ Has Crossed The $1 Billion Mark At The Worldwide Box Office

Disney continues to add to its incredibly large bank as it was just announced this week that the live-action ‘Aladdin‘ remake crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office.

This makes it the fifth Disney-branded live-action film to hit the mark, joining Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, and the second and fourth Pirates of the Caribbean.

Aladdin has taken in $343.1 million domestically and $656.2 million internationally, led by $98.8 million in Japan, $81.4 million in Korea, $53.3 million in China and $45.3 million in the UK.

Aladdin opened with $117 million over the Memorial Day holiday and easily outperformed Disney’s pre-opening domestic projections, which were in the $75 million to $85 million range for the four days.

This marks the first time Will Smith has reached the $1 billion mark at the box office, so it looks like taking heat for playing the Genie role paid off for him.

Congratulations to everyone involved! Now we’ll wait and see if Lion King follows.

‘Aladdin’ Has Super Successful Opening Weekend At The Box Office, Makes Over $100 Million

Put another “W” on the board for Disney. The live-action remake of ‘Aladdin‘ just put up some outstanding numbers at the box office. You’ll remember that the early projections had this movie making around $70 million during its opening weekend. The highest predictions were at $100 million.

Well, during the holiday weekend ‘Aladdin’ made a cool $112 million, soaring past every projection out there.

It opened in over 4,400 locations across the country. The reviews from critics were mixed, but the audience score has been much better. ‘Aladdin’ has an A CinemaScore, compared to a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In its opening weekend, Aladdin earned more than Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book, which pulled in $103.2 million in its 2016 debut, but came in behind the Emma Watson-starring Beauty and the Beast, which collected $174.7 million when it premiered in 2017.

It also earned over $120 million internationally, so you can bet Disney is very pleased.

Meanwhile, Olivia Wilde’s high school comedy Booksmart did not perform well. It opened in over 2,500 locations, but it made just $8.7 million this past weekend. The film was loved by critics and those who have seen it (me included) loved it as well.

Sadly, just not enough people went out to watch it. Perhaps it’ll find some new life during its second weekend.

First Reviews For ‘Aladdin’ Are Coming In, And They’re Not Great

We all know Disney’s upcoming live-action ‘Aladdin‘ film has caused a lot of chatter online, even before the release of the first trailer. People have criticized Will Smith’s portrayal of Genie. If you missed the drama, you can click on this link.

The film is just two days away from being released and the reviews from critics are starting to trickle in.

‘Aladdin’ currently has a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 55 score on Metacritic, which means the reactions have been mixed. In fact, according to Metacritic, there have been 15 mixed reviews, 15 positive reviews and 2 negative reviews.

So, to be fair, we’ll show you one positive review and one negative review.

The first (positive) review comes from Mick LaSalle via the San Francisco Chronicle

Aladdin, the live-action remake of the 1992 Disney animation, is more than a pleasant surprise. It’s a complete delight that stands up its own and is, in many ways, an improvement on the original. Today, ‘Aladdin’ is a Disney movie, or a Guy Ritchie movie. But I wouldn’t be surprised if, in five years, ‘Aladdin’ is thought of as the film where Naomi Scott broke through.

As for Will Smith, legs or not, he makes for a sly, sensitive genie. Some will compare him to Robin Williams’ earlier genie, but there’s really no comparing them, because they were playing different roles.

Now let’s share the other side. Slant Magazine’s Jake Cole writes…

Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin is a remake in the most literal sense. Much of the film’s first act traces the narrative beats of the 1992 animated feature, and in shot-for-shot fashion.

Certainly there was a lot of room to bring a contemporary perspective to this material—to counter the original’s problematic representation of its Middle-Eastern milieu and deepen its characters. Instead, the film settles for telling you a joke you’ve already heard and botching the delivery.

Who to believe? *shrug* you’ll probably just have to watch the film for yourself. It hits theaters this weekend.

‘Aladdin’ Hopes To Have $80 Million Opening Over Memorial Day Weekend

It’s been a long road to the big screen for Disney’s latest live-action remake, Aladdin. Most of the drama has surrounded Will Smith’s portrayal as Genie. Fans first complained that he wasn’t blue enough, then they said he was too blue, then they said he was scary, and the list goes on and on.

Thankfully, Disney was able to win some fans back with the release of a second trailer, which featured more footage and gave us our first taste of the music.

And they’re hoping they did enough to make at least $80 million during the film’s opening weekend. Aladdin will hit theaters May 24 during Memorial Day Weekend.

Box office watchers believe ticket sales could near $100 million through Monday, when kids are out of school for the holiday. That number could fluctuate in the three weeks leading up to the film’s arrival as Disney finalizes its marketing rollout. We can only assume those efforts include taking extra steps to assure audiences that Will Smith’s disturbingly blue Genie won’t be so jarring on the big screen.

For comparison, the ‘Jungle Book‘ remake made $103 million during its opening weekend and ‘Beauty and the Beast‘ made a cool $174 million.

So while they’d be okay with an $80 million opening, they have to hoping it crosses the $100 million mark.

Disney Drops Trailer For Live Action ‘Aladdin’ Movie, And Fans Are Hating On Will Smith’s Appearance As Genie

Remember when Disney released the first photos from their live action ‘Aladdin‘ remake, and people were all pissed off because Will Smith’s Genie wasn’t blue? Well, now they’re pissed because he’s too blue!

The first trailer for the film dropped during the Grammys last night, and people are not happy with Will Smith’s makeup.

One angry user wrote…

“I just stepped outside and … how are there not crashed cars? How are there not people walking around in a daze? Have they not seen the Will Smith genie yet? Dare I show them?”

Another wrote…

“It turns out that Will Smith’s Aladdin Genie will haunt my nightmares.”

And while they are obviously being dramatic, he does look a little, uh, strange. Maybe they went a little too hard with the blueness? Or…I don’t know. I’m not sure how to fix it. My advice would have been to not make a live action remake in the first place.

Aladdin will hit theaters May 24, 2019. Check out the trailer below…

Check Out The First Official Image Of Will Smith As Genie In Upcoming Live-Action Remake Of ‘Aladdin’

The upcoming live-action remake of ‘Aladdin‘ will hit theaters May 24, 2019, and a full trailer for the movie should drop soon, but before then, we’re being treated to a few official photos from set.

In the photos below, you can see Will Smith as Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine.

Several fans have pointed out that Smith’s Genie is not blue in these photos, and they’re not happy about it.

Not sure why Genie’s color would matter that much, but you folks should know that Genie will in fact be blue in the movie. This coming straight from Will Smith’s Instagram account.

As mentioned above, this Aladdin remake will hit theaters in May. These photos look super corny, but obviously you can’t judge a movie by a few staged photos from set. We’ll wait until we see the trailer to make a real judgement.

Check Out The First Teaser Trailer For Live-Action ‘Aladdin’ Film Starring Will Smith

Disney is keeping the live-action remakes coming. The live-action remake of the 1992 classic ‘Aladdin‘ is scheduled to hit theaters May 24, 2019.

And since we’re just six months away now, Disney decided it was time to hit us with the first teaser trailer.

Newcomer Mena Massoud has the titular role. Will Smith is taking on the role as the Genie and Marwan Kenzari will portray Jafar.

John August wrote the script for this remake, which is pretty exciting for the screenwriting nerds of the world. For those who don’t know, August is known for being very active online with the screenwriting community. He even has a podcast with fellow screenwriter Craig Mazin called Scriptnotes.

So yeah, it’s nice to see him land such a big title. We’re sure he got a nice little paycheck.

It’ll be interesting to see how fans and critics react to this movie. So far, Disney has had a lot of success with their live-action remakes. Can they keep it going?

It’s Official: The Upcoming Live Action ‘Aladdin’ Remake Will Be A Musical

You might have heard rumors floating around about the upcoming Disney live-action remake of Aladdin. Those rumors claiming the director, Guy Ritchie, was planning on making this remake a musical.

And that would make sense. The original features songs like A Whole New World, Friend Like Me and Prince Ali, so it would be silly to not focus on the music.

In a recent interview with Nerdist, Ritchie confirmed that this remake would be a musical, “It’d be tough not to make [Aladdin] a musical,” he said.

He wouldn’t reveal anything else about the project, mainly because he doesn’t have it all figured out yet.

“I’m still looking for cast members. We still haven’t found exactly which direction we’re going in. I’m confident that at some stage it will reveal itself to me, but right now it’s just a bit too premature.”

Interesting. Hopefully he knows more than he’s portraying in this interview. It would be surprising if he truly didn’t know the major plot points of this remake. We’re sure there is some plan in place.

RIGHT? RIGHT?

The good news is that while he still might be looking for cast members, he has reportedly found the biggest piece of the cast. We know Will Smith is in negotiations to play Genie.

We’ll keep you posted as more information is released.

Will Smith Is In Talks To Join ‘Aladdin’ Reboot, Find Out Which Role He’ll Be Taking On!

According to multiple reports, Will Smith is in talks to voice the Genie in Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin, which is being directed by the talented Guy Ritchie.

Most of you will remember that the late (and great!) Robin Williams voiced the role in the original 1992 classic. The move would make sense for Smith. He’s been wanting to land a family-friendly film for a while now after his recent string of adult dramas and big action films.

He was circling one of the lead roles in ‘Dumbo,‘ but he walked away because of scheduling conflicts.

If he gets the role, Smith will probably be the biggest name in the movie. The studio plans to cast newcomers as Jasmine and Aladdin.

We have high hopes for this movie. As mentioned above, Guy Ritchie will be directing it, and the wonderful John August wrote the script for it. August is the screenwriter behind Big Fish and Frankenweenie. He also co-hosts the Scriptnotes podcast with fellow screenwriter Craig Mazin.

We’ll see if this updated version of Aladdin can match the success of the 1992 film. It was the highest-grossing film of the year in 1992, and won two Academy Awards.
