‘Abominable’ Tops Weekend Box Office, Earns $20.8 Million

Universal/DreamWorks released their latest animated feature Abominable this past weekend and it grabbed the top spot at the box office.

The fantasy/adventure film made $20.8 million during its opening weekend and scored favorable reviews from critics. It has an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a pretty great audience score as well.

It also made an additional $29 million worldwide. It was made on a $75 million budget, which is really not all that much for an animated flick.

Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, was pleased with the opening…

We saw a great opportunity for not just an opening weekend, but a strong corridor going forward. With this particular weekend, kids have been back in school for some time and routines have settled down.

This upcoming weekend, ‘Joker‘ will hit theaters, so Abominable will not be repeating its box office victory.
