You can hate on Tyler Perry’s movie collection all you want, but the dude knows how to please his audience. The sequel, Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, opened up inside theaters this weekend. The comedy battled it out against the environmental disaster flick, Geostorm.
Many people thought Geostorm might take the number one spot at the box office, thanks to its heavy promotion, but there was no stopping Madea.
Boo! 2 brought home an estimated $21.6 million, which is not bad considering the budget was just $20 million. The audience seemed to love it, but the critics slammed it, of course. It received an 8% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Geostorm didn’t perform that much better with the critics. It received a 13% rating on the site.
Basically, movie fans didn’t see the best Hollywood has to offer this past weekend. It looks like most studios are using the second half of October as a dumpster. It’s not uncommon. The good news is that the awards season is basically here, and we’ll see several award-winning films released in November and December.
Coming in third place at the box office was Happy Death Day, which brought in just under $10 million in its second weekend. In total, it’s made over $40 million. Not bad for a film with a $5 million budget. Another success for Blumhouse.
