Before the film’s release, there were several articles questioning if Straight Outta Compton could cross into the mainstream and become a huge success. Of course, those articles were ridiculous because the movie didn’t need to cross anything to become mainstream.
How would a film about one of the most popular groups in the most important cultural movement of the last 30-40 years not be mainstream? Oh wait, I know! It’s because there wasn’t a straight white male lead to market the movie, right? Because we all know no one wants to see a movie if Zac Efron isn’t taking off his shirt in it.
I mean, yeah, their debut studio album Straight Outta Compton shocked the world when it reached double platinum sales status, but would anyone actually go see a movie about the group? The answer is yes.
N.W.A shocked the world again. Straight Outta Compton crushed the competition last weekend with an impressive $56.1 million total. It passed American Pie 2 to become the biggest-ever August debut for an R-rated film. It has already doubled its production budget in just three days.
“The movie tapped into something in our culture and that made it more of a must-see.” Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com told Variety.
