Back in July, we told you that Lionsgate was making plans to release the final film in the Divergent series as a TV movie. This all because of the poor results at the box office for the last movie released in the franchise. Allegiant made just $29 million during its opening weekend, and the general audience no longer seemed to care about the series.
To avoid losing more money, the studio has been thinking about releasing the final installment as a low budget TV movie, which didn’t go over all with the cast. When the rumors first started, Shailene Woodley was just as shocked as everyone else, “Honestly, I was on a plane when all that happened and I landed, and I’m like ‘Whoa, what’s going on?!’ I need to talk and find out what the details are. I know as much as you do.”
She later made it clear that she did not sign up to be in a television show, and we have to imagine most of her co-stars felt the same way.
Well, it’s been two months since then, and we still don’t know what the heck is going on. During an interview on Monday’s Today Show, Woodley assured her fans that she wasn’t stepping away from the role yet. However, she also made it clear that she’ll only come back if it’s an actual movie…
“Well, I mean, if it’s a movie. [laughs] They haven’t finalized any decisions, so it’s actually a moot point to talk about it now, out of respect to Lionsgate and everyone involved. I’m not exactly sure where they stand so we are kind of all in a limbo game. I signed up to tell the whole story of Tris, and I would love to be able to do that. Nothing would make me happier.”
We’ll see what happens. I feel like they’ll work something out though. They need Woodley.
