We told you about the huge loss ‘Cats‘ is experiencing at the box office, and now we’re telling you about the huge gain ‘Knives Out‘ is experiencing.

The original film, which was written/directed by Rian Johnson, was made on a somewhat modest $40 million budget.

It was released inside theaters over the Thanksgiving holiday and performed quite well with both critics and the general audience. It sits at a solid 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The highly entertaining murder mystery crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office this past weekend and $200 million globally.

It’s another triumph for original content — a form of entertainment once thought to be imperiled by the ubiquity of franchise fare.

Knives Out became the de facto choice for families without young kids over the holiday season. Lionsgate’s motion picture co-chairman Joe Drake said the film had a broader appeal than the studio initially expected.

And that’s the truth. I saw it with my girlfriend and her 75-year-old grandmother who typically hates anything to do with Hollywood. She walked out of the theater raving about the movie, so yeah, its appeal was wide.
