It’s a day to celebrate, folks. ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker‘ has finally been knocked off the top of the box office. The film had been number one at the box office for three weekends in a row.

But Sam Mendes’ beautiful war drama ‘1917‘ was able to win the box office this past weekend, with a nice $36.5 million opening weekend.

It was expected to make between $20 and $25 million, so we have to imagine the studio is very happy with $36.5 million. In addition to the impressive box office number, the film was also nominated for Best Picture at the 2020 Oscars.

It’s also nominated for Best Director, Original Screenplay, Original Score, Cinematography, and more.

I saw it this past weekend and was pretty impressed. It wasn’t my favorite of the year, but it was beautifully shot. This is one of those movies where I’m more impressed with the directing/cinematography than the story or characters, which is rare for me.

I could definitely see this movie winning for best directing.
