Now that the dust has settled a bit, we can all look back at that embarrassing Oscars mix-up and laugh. But when it was happening, there was only person who found humor in the situation.
And that person was Ryan Gosling. When it was revealed that Moonlight had actually won the award for Best Picture, Gosling started chuckling on stage while everyone else looked shocked and confused.
So why was he laughing? Well, we finally have the answer. While speaking at the Abode Summit in Las Vegas, the 36-year-old actor explained the awkward situation…
“What really was happening as I was watching — it was surreal anyway — I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd, and guys were coming on with headsets, and I felt like someone had been hurt. I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head. And then I just heard Moonlight won, and I was so relieved that I started laughing.”
Basically, he thought something serious was going on, and he was relieved to find out it was something trivial.
He also claims he’s happy Moonlight won. They deserved it.
“Truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won. It’s such a groundbreaking film, made for a million dollars, and an incredible achievement, and I’m so happy for them that they were being recognized.”
