Does the name Michael Vitar sound familiar to you? Probably not, but we’re willing to bet you all know Benny ‘The Jet’ Rodriguez. He was the cool kid in a neighborhood full of squares. Benny was the best player on the field in The Sandlot.
Michael Vitar is the actor who played the character. He retired from acting back in 1997 after starring in a handful of childhood favorites including, The Sandlot and D2: The Mighty Ducks. After acting, Vitar became a firefighter and seemed to be having a normal life, but now he’s in one of the biggest pickles of his life.
The 36-year-old was arrested last week for an incident that happened back on Halloween. According to the reports, Vitar and two other firefighters beat up a 22-year-old man on Halloween night. The man was passing out candy to children in the street when Vitar and his friends attacked him. All three were arrested on assault charges. The Los Angeles Fire Department has placed Vitar under administrative leave with pay.
An attorney for the former actor claims the charges should have never been filed. Vitar and his friends were simply protecting the children in the neighborhood. The 22-year-old man was apparently wearing a mask and acting very strange while passing out the candy. They asked the man to leave the neighborhood, but he kept coming back, and that’s when they were forced to take action.
If he’s convicted, he could face up to four years in prison.
