Regina King’s ‘One Night In Miami’ Is Already Getting Oscar Buzz

The 2020/2021 Oscar season is set up to be the most bizarre season ever. Academy voters might not have a lot films to choose from, seeing as how the ongoing pandemic has pushed back so many release dates.

But still, there are some frontrunners, and one of the more recent ones is Regina King’s, One Night In Miami.

In her feature directorial debut, King is already making history. She became the first black woman to direct a film selected by the Venice Film Festival. The movie had its debut at the festival recently, and the reviews have been glowing.

In fact, a few critics are already speculating that King could take home an Oscar for her work. For those who don’t know, One Night In Miami, is set in 1964.

The film tells the ‘inspired by true events’ story of boxer Cassius Clay, activist Malcolm X, football star Jim Brown, and singer Sam Cooke celebrating Clay winning the world heavyweight title over Sonny Liston in a Miami hotel room. The screenplay was written by Kemp Powers (it’s based upon his stage production of the same name).

Variety has called it the “first solid Oscar contender to drop” in 2020, which is huge praise.

Even more critics will get the opportunity to check out the film at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10.

It does not currently have a public release date, but it will be distributed by Amazon Studios, so expect to hear something soon.
