You might see “$50 million” opening weekend and sneeze at that, ’cause we’re so accustomed to these huge comic book films making over $100 million during their openings.
But there was a time when a $50 million opening was considered a success. Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One‘ is opening this Easter weekend, and according to the experts, it could bring home over $50 million. This is a bit of a surprise, because it was originally tracked to take in closer to $40 million.
Why did the projections go up? Because it had an impressive $12 million opening on Thursday night, and thanks to most people being off today, it should have a wonderful Friday as well, which will set it up nicely to reach $50 million by the end of the weekend.
“The sci-fi spectacle earned an A- CinemaScore with an audience that was 59% male. The overall audience was 44% under 25, who gave it an A-, while those over 25 gave the film a B+. The solid opening day performance validates the studio’s decision to move up the opening by a day to Thursday to take advantage of many moviegoers being on vacation during the period.”
The positive reviews from critics will certainly help this movie as well. It sits at a 77% rating on Rotten Tomaotes and is “certified fresh” whatever that means. At one point, I thought that title was given to films with an 80% rating or above, but apparently that’s not the case.
Anyway, you can check out a trailer for the movie below…
